308 vs 300 WSM

so what do you guys think. im setting up a long range rifle package. the farest range im thinking is about 800. These shots will be on many elk,muleys and possibly one day a moose. so far in the last 2 years i've shot 2 cows over 600 yards. 2x2 muley(my first deer) at 250 and a moster 5x5 muley (on public ground... scored 170) at 580yards.

current setup
(used it for 2 years)

weatherby vanguard 300 wsm
nikon monarch 4x-16x BDC recticle

awesome setup but the BDC only has circles out to 600 yards

so past that 600 mark was pretty sketching


scope ideas?

i've been looking at getting another monarch or buckmaster( both made by nikon) but in mil-dot. i've read alot about how (once mastered) is can be very efficent at ranging and killing. but is there anyother recticles out there that do is better

 

That's a long way to be shooting at game - but maybe that's because I hunt the eastern woods. For what you are looking for, out of the two, the 300 WSM is the better choice. At 500 yards with the 308 you are around 1200 ft-lbs whereas some 300WSM loads will still be carrying more than 1700 ft-lbs.

 

personally, I would go with the full sized 300 WIN MAG if I planned to shoot at game over 500 yards.

that is some fine shooting. i havent shot a rifle in 5 years. i bet i would miss at 300.

 

why on earth would you even think about changing your set up if you're getting the results you're claiming from your 300 wsm? but damn, those are long distances to be shooting at an animal.

 

i have been doing long distance shooting for 20+ yrs. it dosent mader what type of gun you use. figuar out all the bullistic and fps alone with other thing and you can setup any gun to shot that dist. there is alot of good reading out there on how to do this.there also is companys that do it for you. for cheap. you give them your info and they make you a scope. for under $2000 mostly under1000. do ur research hopefully that helps you practise practise

 

thanks guys i thought about it and i think im going with the 300 because i can get a lot more ftp out at those ranges.


but now what do you guys think about scopes. i've been really thinking about mil-dot but its really hard to get measurements( in mills).

like .1,.2,.4,.8,.9,1 mills are easy and fast to get but what about .3,.5,.7 and when im shooting 800 yards and im off by .1 or .2 mills that means miss.like for example with a deer that has a 24" deep chest and i measure it at .8mill i think its 833 yards. If in reality it really measures .7mill then it is really 952 yards so a HUGE MISS.

check the horus reticle. no bdc or windage, its all done by holds. much faster to adjust to changing ranges/speeds. provided you know your holds of course

I prefer to use a short action bolt rifle. Most of my mid-long range shooting has been with a 308. My extra long range shooting is done with my 338 Lapua Mag. For a do everything hunting rifle I would definately go with the 300wsm, its flat shooting and has plenty of puch to it.

 

As far as optics go I always have my scopes custom made by U.S. Optics (Jeff is a great guy) I like the canadian mil retical the best along with the TPal configuration. the only exception to this is on my AR, I use an ACOG.

 

x4 on the .300 win mag. Nightforce makes excellent glass, and if you have the cash, check out David Tubb's DTAC system.

 

ya i really dont want to spend more than $650 on a scope so mabey ill just get a better rangefinder.
