I think the access cab will still exist but not the current style clamshell doors, but with regular opening half doors.

 

There’s still quite a long hood. You would think a turbo four being smaller they could shorten the wheelbase by moving the cab forward. Then you could get the benefits of a shorter wheelbase, bigger cab and full size bed.

 

^An inline-4 is longer than a V6. A V6 is only 3 cylinders long And I think the long hood is either to meet pedestrian impact rules or to enlarge the truck's "footprint" by CAFE definition. Consider the 3rd gen front end grew by 2" even though it uses the same radiator support as 2nd gen.

 

Unfortunately I didn't see them either, while lurking around. Thanks anyway if you did, but I couldn't find them.

Oh, that's why. Once I saw it didn't have a TTV6, I wasn't really interested in what they did with it or thought I missed something. It's weird why they keep working so hard to make an all-new model look extremely identical to the old one, on the oldest platform out there.

When I first saw it leaked quietly back in 2021 in that BEV presentation photo I uploaded.
I didn't believe it was real and was just a fake placeholder PS with a fake front end. It looked like one of these shitty clickbait renderings from Engrish spam, which took the last gen RX and put on some random cues from newer Lexus models.

Spy shots and teasers proved me wrong, so I was in absolute shock and realized every model Lexus showed there, was the real deal, even if 5 million years away. Found it ridiculous that was their all-new model, after a 7 year run and platform change. I can totally empathize with you on believing that, I had to do a double take and be sure when it was revealed, it was actually 100% new and not warmed over.

Pretty much, as it's telling how many younger faces I keep seeing down in Southwest, behind Tacoma TRDs ever so often. And even up here. Social media is playing a big factor, as is this forum with the billions of mods done to various generations.

The 2G Tacoma changed it all and Toyota was very cutthroat about ensuring that delivered. Everyone else has finally caught up, now toward the end of Gen 3, where Toyota will be the only one with an all-new vehicle and everyone else is carryover in some form. 'Bout time, as you said since it's been 20 years almost (2004).

I wouldn't keep going down the pessimist route. Unless something has changed in terms of their plans, it's going to be very diverse, even if it is borrowing engines from other models and keeping the old ones too.

They are strictly prototypes now, no longer mules like the past year and half. This being the final article, their bread & butter, and a topmost segment seller, it has to be covered very well to protect that position.

Plus, my other theory is that Toyota revealed this vehicle already and feel keeping it close to vest until the last minute is acceptable, because "you've already seen it and can wait". On another forum, I noted that in the event of leaks or an early "unconfirmed" reveals (ie teasers), automaker's marketing people tend to err on the side of being 10x more secretive until press embargo is over.

Like a kid getting one cookie before supper and told to wait, because they've already been spoiled and can wait for more dessert later.

 

3.5 cylinders long.

 

A v6 has no reason to exist other than packaging. The perfect engine is either a i6 or v8 or v12. The rest have always been designed as some sort of compromise

In this case no it doesn't, and it is not pessimistic to say so. Other than sales, it is not class-leading in anything. It never was. People don't buy Tacoma's because of tech, features, or on-street capability they can't find elsewhere. I get the off-road capability and aftermarket support that's attractive and necessary for a very small percentage of buyer.

They have a loyal following and people continue to buy them because of their past reliability and value. That was my reason for buying one. The Gen4 Tacoma won't have any tech, features, or on-street capability that the competition doesn't already offer. The Gen3 is the most recent example of this.

 

Well, there is one aspect of the Tacoma which is unique to it (assuming one doesn't consider the Gladiator a competitor, which I don't), a manual transmission. Last year when I bought my Tacoma, if it had been the Ford Ranger which was available with three pedals under the dash instead of the Tacoma, I would have bought the Ford.

 

You're correct and I agree. The MT also factored in my decision to purchase the Tacoma. Part of me wants them to no longer offer an MT with the Gen4. I'd like to have a rare vehicle for once that is maybe sought after in ten years.

i also dont want there to be a manual in the 4th gen. just bought a 2023 manual because it was pretty much confirmed gen 4 wouldn't have manual. if it ends up having one i may have to trade in early.

 

You dont think the gladiator is competition? Have you driven one? Seating position is superior, you can add 35s from factory, transmission is better ,gearing is better . A lot and I mean a lot of guys have switched to the gladiator once they have driven one

 

I think that the ability to compare the gladiator to the tacoma is fair and many consider the jeep to be midsize. Its all personal preference as usual, but for me I have owned a jeep and do not see myself in another one. i dont think the positives outweigh the negatives in this comparison due to the cost of the jeep. Also the longer wheelbase is something I don't care for. Nothing 35's cannot fix as mentioned $$.(cannot deny the ability to put 35's on from factory is cool. It is.) I have found that having 37's on some of my vehicles in the past, for me, were overkill and I've have had great success with 33's. Have several friends with the gladiator, one with 40's, and I like both vehicles. The gladiator is a great blend between midsize and fullsize trucks considering weight, towing capacity, wheelbase and cost; all greater than the Tacoma's. I look at the gladiator as a full-size truck personally. I am sure someone will say they can get a great deal on a gladiator, but in my experience I do not believe it's worth the extra 15-20000 dollars. I'll keep my gen 3 till the wheels fall off, but if toyota screws up the gen 4 my next truck could very well be the gladiator.

 

How can it be a full size? The interior is only slightly larger, the long box on a tacoma must almost match the length of a gladiator.

 

i said in my opinion i consider fullsize. You have yours. I dont consider the length of the box, but wheelbase, it is there with half ton trucks. You cannot discount the weight of the truck or the tow capacity which brings it up as well. Having wheeled in them i agree the interior is noticeably larger. Everything about it puts it more in the tundra catagory. Also like i said, it is great blend between midsize and fullsize trucks.

 

my buddies regular cab short bed f150 is shorter than my access cab tacoma. does that make his f150 a mid size or my tacoma a full size
