I had a p0174 and I changed out the MAF sensor with an oem sensor from toyota. The truck is running much better and seems likes everything is good to go… well After about 10-15 miles check engine light comes on its p0430. Here is some data from tech stream. What are some next steps in trouble shooting this?

You need cats, but let me walk you through how to be sure. Maybe share results if you can.

Engine> Active test > Injector volume.

    Select B1S1 V B2S1 V B1S2 V and B2S2 V

    Make sure its warm.

Now graph the data, with the 4 sensors reading. Then trigger the fuel trim change lean or rich, doesnt matter.

There should be a delay with the B1S2 and B2S2 with the fuel trim change. If the line reverses when the upstream changes then the cat is doing nothing, and P0420/430 will trigger.

Screen shot the change/cross over with results.

Appreciate this mate I will get it checked out tomorrow.

I believe we have three cats, two from the heads they y pipe into the one, do I need all three?

Why would I not get the p0430 before with the MAF?

Also some more info on the truck

3rd catalytic converter is not monitored. If it was there would be B1S3.

Some monitors won't trigger until others are set.

Your cats were likely close to failing, but it was the straw broke the camels back. Most cats fail on Tacoma around the 15 year mark. Some earlier, some later.

My truck was a bad tank of gas that set it off.

So just the two that are connected to the heads that need to be changed with the gaskets.
Sounds rough, I really appreciate your help sir and I’ll report back when I get that test done tomorrow to confirm.

Ok blue green is af upstream after being commanded rich from lean. They dive in voltage as response.

The yellow and red are down steam o2 sensors. If the cat was bad they would rocket up in voltage to match the rich, but because the cats are working they aren’t seeing the pre cat mixture. So there’s a good delay until eventually they read rich like the upstream.

im at work on my phone so I’ll elaborate more later. This was a 2007 with 260,000km taco

So because both downstream sensors are instantly reacting to the fuel trim change, it means the cat is no longer performing. There should be a delay, but yours instantly went with the AF sensor.

In my photos you can see how the o2 sensors stay where they are and it takes a few frames for them to come up.

Bad news, but at least you know how to test the cats now. Good work!

Are there any other test I could run? How far off am I? The check engine light went off today so is there a sign on how much time I have to get the repair done?

Smell is usually a good indicator. It will smell like start up, but all the time.

You can check for exhaust leaks, but in lower states you usually don't have the rust build up on the exhaust to cause this.

Because the 4 sensors are all mirroring, I expect p0420 and p0430 to return constantly as it clears and comes back.

    Do you have smog testing?

Do you have an idea of how urgent this is? I I’ll I do any damage to my truck if I hold off on the repair a bit?

It's basically a symptomless issue. The only problem is it wont pass smog.

I have 2 failed cats on my truck and I don't care, but I don't have emission regulations here.

I'd change them, but man are they expensive.

Yea I have a feeling it’s going to suck if I had an exhaust leak around my muffler would that cause any of this?

how much are catalytic converters? I would want to go oem but I’m sure that might suck
