A few ‘23 TRD PRO questions

I have researched through the website for answers, but just consolidating into one thread

1 - are the OEM tires truly M&S rated? I can’t remember seeing a snowflake or Mountain logo on the tires?

2 - since I have a stick shift I couldn’t get the JBL system. What is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to get some decent bass? If a powered subwoofer is added, where would it fit since there are storage components under the back seat?

And WTF, Toyota, why not offer the better stereo?

 

1: Doubt it. Factory tires aren't great. Good for pavement and MPGs and okay-ish for light trails and a smattering of M&S. Definitely not as good at M&S as a true 3 peak rated aggressive AT.

2: I put mine under the driver's seat, firing up my own ass. Normal people sacrifice a rear storage cubby to place theirs.

2b-wtf: Consider it a dodged bullet. JBLs are notoriously temperamental and difficult to upgrade.

 

1: almost all OEM tires are M+S, but you're thinking 3 peak mountain snowflake, which they are not. The good years aren't bad in the snow and cold, but you should upgrade anyway, you have a pro!

2: a good installer can recommend an OEM supplemental slim subwoofer.

Only LT versions of the Wranglers are 3 peak rated. That doesn't make them a true snow tire. The SL are all-season only.

If you experience snow and ice, I would always suggest a true snow tire on dedicated rims. I run Nokians in winter and Toyo AT3'S in spring thru fall.

You can upgrade your stereo fairly cheaply by replacing the stock speaker with some quality aftermarket units and adding an amp like an Alpine Powerpack

KTP-445U of a Kicker Key200.4 Smart amp. For bass you can go with a simple powered unit that can hide under the seat or have something like ********* or professionally made.

I run Kicker speakers in all 6 locations with the Alpine amp. I fibreglassed a shallow mount 10" CerwinVega sub into the right rear cubbies powered by a Hertz mono amp.

Just a side note... even with a powered sub, the bass output of the HU drops as the volume is increased.

 

If stereo is important, why not buy a truck with a better stereo?

For sure. I knew I wanted the Tacoma obviously for other reasons and I’m so glad I got it

 

Just ignore M&S rating on any tire, it's meaningless as even some true summer tires can actually achieve the M&S rating. Toyota really should have put some better AT tires on the PRO so people don't have to immediately swap out, but that would drop the MPG I guess. I bought a set of Duratracs for summer and set of Toyo Studded snow tires for winter for ours.

1- 265/75/16 Goodyear Duratracs are the Goodyear tire Toyota should have put on the PRO & Off Road. They have the 3 peak snow designation. They are a beast in the snow, but not an ice tire.

2- Underseat 8" Powered Sub is half decent, and the Subaru (Kicker) plug & Play Tweeter replacement makes a huge difference in sound quality. Really opens up the soundstage.

New front door speakers are a small improvement, but may rob power from the tiny head units amp, (if they are not high sensitivity rating). Rear speakers are a total waste of time as you don't hear them in the front. You can splice the rear door speaker wires with the Powered Subwoofer connection behind the HU.

It wouldn't be a Tacoma if it had a great stereo.
It wouldn't be a Tacoma if it had more interior room.
It wouldn't be a Tacoma if it had a front locker.
And on and on.
There are lots of things the Tacoma lacks.
Everyone knows that.

 

It is better to take the sub output off the front speakers than the rear. It is a better signal and doesn't affect the front speaker output at all.

 

I think you missed my point.

You dinged the OP for buying a Tacoma and complaining about the stereo and wanting to improve it. Yet many of us, I'm sure yourself included, have upgraded parts on our Tacomas to improve it for our needs.

Or are you completely stock?

 

This, the tweeter upgrade is a must, along with sound deadening the doors and you’ll have a solid sounding system.
And I do mean something you’ll appreciate.
I have the JBL setup in my 2013 and it sounded like complete ass until I did the Subaru kicker tweeter upgrade and sound deadened all 4 doors to include the rear cab where the woofer is. I was just in a 2021 Ram 1500 rental for two months and just got my Tacoma back from the body shop. I took for granted how nice my system sounds, sound deadening is cheap, easy and makes a world of difference.
