Do the Toyota Dealers really intend to drive off customers?

I am new on the forum, and have bought and sold many many cars in my life, but i don’t think I have ever experienced such an anti customer experience by Toyota dealers as i have trying to buy a Tacoma???

They hide huge add on garbage ($1995 for coatings and other unnecessary crap), they don't present it upfront, and say they have no say in it when they actually disclose it. All in addition to MSRP, which they act like they can't be r wont discount.

So i just want to know do most members that bought a trd dc 4x4 off road on this forum pay msrp + for a new Tacoma (2021-2023) or is there a dealer in AZ or nearby that will sell this Tacoma for msrp w/o big add ons, or even a costco small discount?

just wondering what is going on?

just voicing my frustrations on how they sell new cars……advise or recommendations are welcome.

It is what it is. Consider buying something else if you don't like the deal.

Go check out other manufacturers. Doubtful you will find any better practices.

Can’t help on a specific dealer, other than start calling dealers and being willing to travel for a deal.

I can only say some dealers are much better then others.

Sadly it seems we are still in a Sellers Market. This is the price no horse trading they know someone will pay
    the price.

    Good Luck!

This is a market thing, not a brand thing. Most dealers are going to add crap like this as way to get around charging over MSRP on high demand vehicles.

A plane ticket is in your future. Find one online you like, call the dealer get the otd price in writing and give them a deposit. You’ll save thousands.
Dealers in Midwest and other regions are discounting off MSRP no bullshit.

Dealerships on the whole are unscrupulous profit pumps. With limited inventories now and moving forward, they know you want their product and see it as an opportunity to open wallets. Fair deals are a thing of the past when you walk into a dealership.

I think it's funny how the dealers think that they, in CA, are doing me a favor by selling me a car. And if i don't buy one i'm losing out, so much so that they are charging "market adjustments" or "dealer upgrades"

To maximum profit, you want to “drive off” the guys that want to pay less, and “lure in” in the ones willing to pay more.

It just the way the game is played.

Businesses need to make a profit or else the doors get closed.

In years past I have horse traded to some great deals from dealers.

That is not the time we are in now.

That annoyed the crap out of me, so I went back in to the dealership a week later and asked for the coatings and crap to be removed as it wasn't disclosed or discussed and is unnecessary. It was removed. Window tint, clear plate and appearance protection at $1867.

Told them I was already paying enough a new vehicle without adding crap on top. Be firm or walk to another dealer.

Remember the dealership ie there to make money, most of the dealership profit is made in the trade in. But the fancy building, the inventory, the employees all like to be paid, many of the dealers have to contend with demands put on them by the manufacturer, I understand that a car / truck is a negative asset in most cases. But remember the sign says for sale, not must buy here.. find another location that you can deal with. Your local dealer hast to do service and when you bring it back to them smile and let the salesman know that you went elsewhere. It will put a smile on your face and it might make him want to deal the next time, he'll understand you are not afraid to go elsewhere.

Agreed. I simply walked away if they wouldn’t want to do MSRP. I wasn’t desperate for a new vehicle. Just had to spend time finding the right dealership that wanted the business.

Welcome to the forum. There’s like a bizillion Toyota dealerships in every town with a population over 500 anymore so I’d tell them to pound sand an start your search on the internet. When I bought my taco I started out with the Costco price and ended up paying less than it by being willing to travel 3 hours across the state. I also only dealt with the internet sales person and not the sharks on the showroom floor. Good luck.

Thanks for the responses, it seems we are mostly in agreement other than those that say just bend over sorta like if you want to buy it.

i just though only a few or half were this bad.

It’s not what you want to hear but it’s the way it is. I believe you’ve had plenty of good experiences with dealships, but how recent were they? Have you been in the market for a house since the pandemic? It’s the same thing times ten.
Theses are the times. That’s what they mean when they say bend over and take it. Obviously shop around and find a price you can swallow because they are out there, but it’s a sellers market and they aren’t having any trouble selling them at the prices we find ridiculous. Until everyone is on the same page or the market shifts, this is the way it is

Sadly this sort dealership behavior is nothing new, Clark Griswold ordered the Antarctic Blue Super Sports Wagon w/ the CB radio and optional rally fun pack, instead he left with the Wagon Queen Family Truckster in Metallic Pea.

I've experienced much of the same lately and not just from Toyota dealers. I've worked at car dealers as well. Being a cash buyer doesn't seem to have any leverage either. Ford has the same BS with their Raptors. My offer of 3k over msrp for a raptor wasn't good enough. They all want 10k, 15k and some 20k over sticker for newish 2022 and 2023 Raptors.

I've heard Toyota of Surprise was selling under msrp on new Tacoma's. I reached out to them about inbound vehicles, but as soon as I mentioned a trade in they wouldn't negotiate anything until I brought my truck in for an appraisal. No thanks I know what it's worth. :annoyed:

I've bought 2 from Bell Road Toyota and one from Right Toyota. I wouldn't take a free vehicle from Right Toyota after my most recent experience with their punk sales manager Ryan. I was lowballed 12k under kbb value and he wanted over msrp on a new tacoma plus I would have to wait 2 months for it to hit the lot. Just have to keep casting the net for better deals I suppose. Maybe try out of state?
