You should see the bottom of my door frames and trim, my wife loves to ram the vacuum cleaner into the wood when cleaning. After 41 years of marriage I quit retouching up the woodwork.
What's the point? The only reason she quit plugging up the toilet is that I refused to plunge it out any longer....what took me so long to say "I ain't doing it any longer!"

I have to cut a sheet of wood to match the top of this arch. Any tips on how to get it right?

My neighbor is a painter. He uses duct tape on carpet for such situations.

    1) tape a sheet of masking paper over the opening
    2) press the opening edges to make an impression
    3) cut impression out
    4) transfer to cardboard, 1/4 underlayment, Masonite, what ever is handy and fine tune the fit

Full disclosure: I'm a wrench guy not a house guy... :notsure:

Using tape (wider/thicker tape is best)
Lightly apply 2 inch tape a little above (3/8 or so) the bottom of baseboard
Gently push tape down while pulling back the carpet pile. Goal is to get tape under the bottom of baseboard but not too much (that makes tape hard to remove)
Don't push tape hard onto carpet. This helps to prevent carpet damage from loose threads
Apply a good coat but don't over apply paint (easier to paint again than trying to clean carpet)
Paint carefully up against tape using it to protect not as a slop guard
    After paint has dried
Push down on tape edge to break any paint bridge before trying to remove it from carpet. This will help prevent you from peeling the fresh paint off baseboard
Removing tape carefully watch for peeling paint and loose threads to prevent carpet damage

    Using a straight edge tool
Gently push the tool under the baseboard
Paint away from both outer edges of tool (use middle of the tool helping to prevent transfer of paint on carpet)
Apply a good coat but don't over apply paint (easier to paint again than trying to clean carpet)
Paint carefully up against tool using it to protect not as a slop guard
Slide tool carefully along the baseboard as you paint
If you see paint is building up on tool
Before continuing carefully remove and clean tool

    As for the stringers
    Same technique applies
Goal is to push the carpet pile back from surface you're painting

Always remember don't use tape/tool as slop guard
