Coworker just bought one. Sixty one thousand dollars for the Mohave edition. It'll be interesting to see how reliable it is, especially since he's a OCD nitpicker.

They are longer then a gen two extra cab with the standard short box. [Measured it personally.]

No I don't think it is competition; certainly not for me. Why? The most off pavement my truck is ever likely to get is rolling across the lawn with a load of mulch. Regarding the other items, you mention, I didn't find a single benefit from the seating position and for us on-road types, why the hell would we care for 35s?

The flip side is the Gladiator was super noisy inside, didn't feel anywhere near as stable at freeway speeds, and then there are the engine issues.

crew cab f150 with 5ft bed is same length as crew cab 6 foot bed tacoma? wheelbase doesn't have alot to do with it imo. next gen mid size trucks are basically 15 year old full sizes at this point

I'm not understanding your response, considering that what you even quoted doesn't even reference pessimism in the first place? I've gone back and reviewed what I said to you.
Yes, you were being pessimistic, without anything to back up your cynical claim quoted below. I can imagine you were getting at the poor reception of the Tundra.

It's easy to take me out of context and imply a narrative that is entirely different than what I've even stated. Did I ever state that the Tacoma offers the best technology and features in this segment of vehicle and the next generation vehicle will blow up the segment? Hell no. For some reason, it continues to sell VERY well with little to no incentives and as a business, that is very important to all of us. Customer retention and conquest sales married to max profit. You explained why you believe it does as well as it does, but in no way did I imply I know why it performs as well as it does numbers wise. Not everyone pays attention to reliability and many don't always see the value, considering how they price out.
I referred to the need to keep it guarded until reveal and that I find it tone deaf for anyone to suggest Toyota drive them around uncovered, when it doesn't even launch for 1 full more year and most importantly, hasn't been officially REVEALED. It doesn't work like that and whenever I've heard such commentary, it's out of misunderstanding or utter disregard for sales and marketing needs. It is little to no different between any manufacturer. Unless something has been officially revealed, why would you expect them to ruin that by driving around uncovered?

My mention of pessimism several posts ago, has absolutely nothing to do with what you stated in response to me.

As for the next generation vehicle, you don't know any of that for a fact at all. It's not confirmed nor can you go off of the outgoing truck as a reliable example to support your narrative, being that it's an outdated architecture it uses with limitations. That basis in some form goes back to 18-19 years ago.

There will be parity with its competition, but there will easily be one or two things Toyota will try to offer over the rest and excel at it. There are many areas Toyota will be definitely outgunned by their competition and I can see that for my below reasons.

I'm very privy to Ford T6 & P703N Ranger development on both a professional and personal level, so I'm well aware of the benchmarking we are doing and some of what Toyota might be doing as well with this vehicle. The real mystery is the next Hilux, which is more a concern of the Australian Ford branch out of Melbourne (where I spent Xmas) on the global version (P703). Not much is known compared to the Tacoma.

I don't see where I mentioned that it's the best truck ever made and that's why it needs to be handled like Area 51. The aspect of privacy is paramount 1 year out from launch and Toyota may not be worried about US market competition seeing the vehicle at this point. The general public is the concern, no thanks to social media. Nobody wants early exposure like that.

I disagreed with you regarding pessimism over your quoted line and the other comments regarding no need for camouflaging PROTOTYPE vehicles, which are representative of the production design. Simple as that.

There won't be a hybrid TTV6 under the hood nor a new V8 block that gets 30 MPG mated to the butteriest 8-Speed manual, out towing the Tundra and 3/4 ton segment. However, everyone in the midsize segment has been feeling the heat (except Nissan) and Toyota is no exception. They are doing what needs to be done, to protect their position in the segment, just as I said in response to you earlier.

I don't see the point of making such cynical claims, when you cannot back it up with known evidence Toyota have taken that lazy approach. This seems to be par for the course on TW anyway, than making any objective observations.

Nearly everyone here is an expert on everything despite what actual known facts and test data tells them. It's mind boggling sometimes.

I can't help wonder how Toyota will strike that balance between that core group of loyalists that appreciate the relative simplicity of the 1-3 gens and the chorus of automotive journalists and critics that find the Tacoma's popularity perplexing due to the relatively utilitarian drive train and interior. Yes, should be interesting.

LOL, fortunately no; I knew folks with those goofy looking things and to a one, they all bought that phone to attract girls. I had a "car phone" from Motorola; the handset looked virtually identical to the one below, the cradle was rather different in that it mounted to the passenger side of the center console and had a toggle to release the handset. The rest of the unit was mounted in the spare tire well.

Yes please. It may not be very popular but I want a shorter nose, hybrid and better fuel economy, more cab space front and back(I'm tall and have a car seat behind me), and 6 foot bed. I have an 08 taco for reference. I've been looking at tundras.
