Did a full transmission service on my 2015 sport today. Results were excellent so thought I would share. A year ago took my Tacoma in for a trans service at Lakeland Toyota. They told me the service is a complete drain and fill. Thinking all was well, I paid and drove home.
Three weeks later I start getting the 3 - 4k rpm shudder. Had no idea how common until I got on this site. Called Toyota and they wanted it back pronto. After checking they actually told me they had overfilled the transmission, and it would more than likely need a new torque converter. $1500.00 bucks! I told them to STICK IT.
I have had a few issues with Lakeland Toyota...but nothing this severe. I will NEVER take a vehicle there for service again!
After a month or so of manually shifting from 4th to 5th, the shudder went away. That was last March 2022. Two weeks ago the shudder came back...same symptoms...3 to 4k rpms...shuddered badly. Manually shifting I did not get the shudder. Knowing it was the torque converter...I purchased 13 qts of Toyota ws atf, a new filter and a gasket. The process is very easy. Buy some clear hose (5/8 od, 1/2 Id) from Lowes and let gravity fill your tranny. Snake the hose from the rear of the engine to the fill port on the transmission. Mine is on the rear and rt side. The hose fits in the fill port perfectly. Get a funnel and secure it to the other end. The first drain along with dropping the pan got me almost 4.5 quarts of old fluid. Toyota said they changed it...I DONT BELIEVE THEM. The fluid was dark and orangish in tint. Many videos will show you how to drop the pan, install a strainer and reinstall the pan with a new gasket. From there I poured in 4 qts and 12oz. Button up below and crank the vehicle. Shift back and forth several times...but don't let the tranny get too hot. After the first drain and fill ..I did the same thing three more times...emptying from the pan and refilling the amount taken out with new fluid.
On the fourth drain, install a new crush or copper washer on the drain plug. Here I added two 2 oz lubeguard shudder fix to the two qts added. Lastly, I used a laser thermometer to check when the bottom of the pan was 100 degrees...that would make the fluid within spects for checking the overflow spout. Mine was low..so I added 1/2 a qt. The transmission cools very quickly, so youll have to start the truck and once again wait for the pan to reach 100 deg on the bottom. I was 1/4 qt high...drained and buttoned it all up!
Took the truck for a 10mile ride...I could tell IMMEDIATELY things were smoother AND....
the Shudder was GONE. IM NOT KIDDING!
This stuff works!! Very pleased with the whole process. I'll probably check the level again tomorrow just to be sure.

Glad you got everything working! No better feeling than doing maintenance and having it all work out.

For anyone else looking to do a flush/fill there is a great write-up at the link below that covers this process:

How many miles on your tranny at the time of service? How did the magnets & strainer look?

Damn nothing better than dealer telling you that your truck will need $1,000+ in parts and you fix it yourself! What a win!!
