My 2021 off-road has 21k miles and has being through some very steep Georgia and Tennessee mountains and no issues at all. Just don’t get jealous when the automatic crowd starts talking about their better MPG. Lol

Buy the manual and don’t look back. It’s the main reason I got the Tacoma. There are a lot of good reasons to buy one but this was numero uno for me. You’ll love it, and I foresee the manual being worth more long term especially if it’s the last year to get one.

I have about 120k on my 18 6mt. I tow a 3k boat around and spend lots of time on gravel mountain roads. Zero issues. No different than when I drove it off the lot new.

You will replace your universal joints long before you replace or rebuild the clutch. My 07 is still on its first as it approaches 300k.

Congrats on the truck. Do you have a vin yet? If not, these things are pretty rare. If your toyota dealer is small, they could go a year or more without getting a MT. I'd recommend using auto trader and track down your dream truck before the 4th gen roll out in about 9 months. A very strong possibility they will drop the MT. But who knows.

If you can drive an MT smoothly, able to make AT-like shits without riding the clutch, then there should be no worries.

I do have a vin. If all goes as planned, I should have it mid Feb - early March. It was the only one I could find decently equipped in 250 miles! Its not my first color choice (white), but I'm not being picky since they seem to be tough to get.

Hogleg, the manual was the main reason I started looking at Tacoma also. I was pretty bummed out thinking I was going to have to go auto. The car I have now is an auto. Good engine, but boring AF!

JDKred, I'm not even going to think about tuning anytime soon! lol. My bike is pretty stupid and scratches the speed itch! I'm planning on keeping the Tacoma fairly tame. Down the road I may end up slapping a pipe on it if I can find something that doesn't sound too ricey. Maybe an intake to save a bit on gas...

Thank you all again for the input! I might actually sleep tonight.

I had this TSB done at my dealer. It is more of a nuisance than a problem. The squeak is more on the lines of annoying, but it does not affect the performance of the clutch.

    Welcome to the forum :hattip:

The life of a clutch is directly proportional to the intelligence of the foot operating it.
If you have experience (and success) with manuals in the past there is nothing to worry about.

Congratulations & enjoy the new truck!

I’m in the same boat: I wanted a manual truck so the Tacoma and the Gladiator were the only options and I prefer Toyota reliability and simplicity. If Toyota didn’t offer a manual transmission in the Tacoma, I’d still be driving my GMC Sierra.

I didn’t consider the Gladiator (surprisingly) despite liking how it looked when it debuted. Not to mention Jeep pricing is so much! $58,500 for the equivalent Jeep is about $15,000 more than my truck MSRP to MSRP. Granted there are Jeep dealers discounting heavily, it’s still a Mopar. They will probably be the last to offer a manual though.

I feel ya. I thought I was going to get murdered or at a minimum divorced when I decided to buy my truck on our anniversary. I was gone half of the day and the kicker is my wife can’t drive a manual so she couldn’t even take it for a drive when I came home with it.

I hear ya brother! My wife has had 3 S10's and a ferd focus to learn to drive a manual on, and she never bothered to. Always too busy. Right before I sold the focus I said this is your last chance, this is the smoothest easiest 5 speed ever so learn it now before the Tacoma arrives. Nope.

Tacoma shows up and everybody is fawning over it so now she want's to drive it.

Sorry lady, that ship has sailed and you ain't on it! . .:brianr:

Wait, people really freak out over the clutch pedal squeaking? That guy thought it deserved a video? Is this a millennial thing?

I purchased a 22 TRD Sport 4WD MT last August. Bought this truck because it was the only one with a manual transmission & a useful sized box. Not a fan of Jeeps anyway, so it was an easy choice. The biggest part of my learning curve was getting used to having reverse positioned at the upper left area of the shift pattern. My previous sticks in the it was in the lower right area. I wanted the driving experience of shifting again. Pulled a trailer about 1800 lb loaded & didn't know it was there. No regrets on my part.

RE: the video on the OP, the composite clutch pedal in these trucks tends to creak when it's hot outside. I ignore it. I wouldn't bother with the temporary dealer TSB "fix".

I may do this mod at some point, but only because I want a rigid metal pedal, not because it actually fixes the creaking (it does): FJ Clutch Pedal Mod

The best part of the mod is this little gem of a quote from that linked post: "The engagement point is now midway through the pedal travel, instead of at the very top"

I bought my 2017 Off Road with 6MT brand new in April 2017. As of this weekend, it now has 89+K miles on the truck, still on the original clutch. Mine doesn't even squeak/squeal as some apparently do.

Last August, my wife and I moved from Northern CA to Kentucky, towed this 400# Coleman travel trailer with us, 2400+ miles across US highway 40. Clutch feels as solid/grippy as day 1.
