But if you do it that way, you save too much time, might have to get dirty, you won't have anything to complain about or have anyone else to blame! Too much responsibility and effort!

yeah, but you won’t have a couple of tweakers selling the OEM parts you paid for on eBay and doing buttstuff on your seats…

You had me until you recommended chain mechanics. :cookiemonster:

Here's my anectdotal: My dealer has been fantastic. The service department always treated me right, and occasional reviews of the dash cam plus putting marks on the filter and tires (Thanks TW for making me paranoid) only demonstrated that every part of the service was done correctly and honestly, at least whenever I checked.

On the other hand, I have never had a visit to Firestone that I haven't had to bring back, twice. I have only had bad luck with them and their goons. To be fair I've met some friendly knowledgeable people there that apologized at my repeat visits and made it right every time, but it took repeat visits before those guys appeared.

Now that my freebies are long gone I do my own. But I also completely understand the perspective of those who cant or just plain dont want to. There is always an honest mechanic nearby, but its like finding a good doctor. It takes a bit of trial and error, but once you find one you hold on and pray they don't retire anytime soon.

Yes I bought my 18 at a Chevy dealer.
Toyota beside them pissed me off and they had this on the lot.
I’ve dealt with the service manager a lot before going Toyota.
Great guy I’m pretty sure it’ll be fine :fingerscrossed:
    I’ll look it over anyway!

    No issues at all!
It’s cold out and I’m old and getting lazy.
My next one I’ll do, it’ll be warmer here.
Plus it was free and they filled the washer fluid also.
I looked for leaks checked oil level and wheels. They liked my truck!

    Garbage.

And how incompetent does someone need to be to fill the truck up when it’s on an incline and not realize the dipstick will read well past full when it’s on level ground..? But I guess they made the mistake in the first place to get you there, so… yikes. Sorry OP.

For sure do your own oil changes and perhaps find a different dealer for any warranty work you can’t do yourself. That is if you keep the truck after this..

I won't name dealers in case this is no bueno but I did my cabin air filter like a week before I went in for an ECU flash, service writer said it was due, told him it was just done, he said "Oh, okay, I'll just have the guy leave the filter on the seat"

    o_O

If I ever need to go back to a dealer, I'm going there.

Glad you had a good experience at your dealer, it's how it should be, I do know people who also have the same. My local Firestone or Goodyear is what I use for certain types of services, so I stand by my recommendation.

That is not to say that there will not be a bad experience there, or anywhere really. Heck I over-filled my own oil when my new T4R went from one generation to the next with the same 4.0 but different oil filter type and capacity. It’s that dammed TOYOTA 6.5 instead of 5 or 6 qts. b/s those knucklehead engineers do to trip us up, go figure. Still my bad though.

However, being acutely acquainted with how both of those business models operate, and what their limitation are, I can assure the stealership is a far worst place to bring a vehicle than a franchise for those type (oci) services.

A good reputable shop maybe better, but even they can/do make mistakes also and may not have the deep pockets to come-up with $30k for a new motor. They’ll make it right, but not by spending $30k.

There are Firestones/GoodYear places I wouldn’t bring my vehicle to. And that is why it's important to check reviews, see if its a busy place because the last thing they want is a bad rep. And a good manager is usually there during normal hrs, on the premises taking in customers personally checking some of the work.

That is where I’ll bring my vehicle when and if the day comes that I can no longer do my own.

I worked at a Toyota Dealership as a Used car recon/Toyota tech. I worked right across from the quick lube bays. After watching them work for over 2 years I made the executive decision to never go in for service. I bought my own Toyota oil from the dealership and 4 TRD pro oil filters and will be doing all the oil changes myself. 18 years in the business I know when people don't care about their job.

It took 18 years to figure that out? This is yet more evidence that DIY is mandatory.

Trust me, I knew long before that. The 18-year comment was purely qualifying my response. I also no longer do side work now that I am in aerospace. I bled plenty as a tech for crap pay. I was one of the good ones.

    NOT 18 years.

Some folks don't pay attention to what is actually written. Some don't even read everything before making stupid comments.

I don't mind. I also don't need to participate on here. I try and help people and offer some advice but also realize I am in a keyboard warrior environment where no one really knows me. I swore off forums up until I bought a Tacoma and thought I could use some advice and could also give some advice. It its not wanted, lots of luck gentlemen. ;)
