My grandfathers family emigrated from Scotland and i still have alot of family in the Edinburgh and Selkirk areas. At 13 I got sent to a private school (which was paid for by my uncle to rub it in my dad's face that he wasn't well off enough to pay for appropriate schooling since I was a smertfuck in DC public schools) so I lived in a town near Oxford for 2 years, 7th and 8th grade.

Thanks, it was definitely an interesting life experience than I can look back on fondly now (for the most part)

Being so young in Germany did you become fluent in it? Or was it a school on base so everyone pretty much spoke english?

I'd rather not wrestle with mine and replace a pump again if that tapered end fell out.

Guess it's something that has happened (though not often) so this plug stops the loss of fluid if it fell out. You do need to refill it before you go driving again so you keep power steering...and not kill your pump.

    Cheap insurance.

Was going to say, that was a good age to soak up a lot of knowledge.

Yeah I went to school there from Kindergarten to 3rd or 4th grade, can't recall. We had already been living there before I was old enough to start school.

I did learn common phrases in German, as in able to speak enough to have a short talk, knew all my numbers and colors, and several cultural songs.

All that has of course left me but I do still remember my numbers up to 30?

It was on a military base so everyone spoke English but many of the teachers or staff were locals. This was out near Frankfurt.

What's funny but also messed up was the rate of learning and the difference out here.

Was shocked when I learned from my wife that multiplication is taught in 3rd grade and some other stuff.

I remember learning multiplication tables in the 2nd grade, still remember that song Ms Davey used to play on tape on the boombox.

I started school in CA, we were doing multiplication in 2nd grade but when I moved to WA it was in 3rd for whatever reason. I think regionally things change a lot too.

Weird, but yeah it's definitely a regional thing.

What's sad is SPED has a lot of stuff that isn't even standard across the state, though there are quite a bit of things that are "by law" and Stephanie gets pissed when a SPED teacher isn't holding themselves by those professional standards.

The "standard" stuff I'm referring to is the support and staff needed to support the SPED department.

But of course that requires a budget so...most schools say fuck that.

That's cool, it's interesting to me to see what gets retained with languages learned. I was exposed to Broad Scots (native tongue of Scottish people but different than Scots Gaelic) from my family, and can understand it (for the most part) when it's spoken but I'll be damned if I can speak any of it. Other than "Dinna kin" which means I don't know lol.

They even print (or used to when I lived there) scottish cartoons in English and Scots language, reading those was one of my favorite things from my time visiting them. " 'Oor Wullie"(poor willy)and "The Broons" (the browns)

They've gotten alot more English in their current prints1024.jpg

You may or may not remember me mentioning, but my gf is in school to be a sped teacher.
I now have the "privilege" of listening in to her online classes sometimes... my goodness. I'm never shy about calling out stupidity, but jesus there are some stupid people going into education roles. Sad, really. And all that frustration your wife and my gf experience in their roles is part of the result of letting just anyone graduate/certify.

Fortunately there are many specific requirements and certifications needed to be a SPED teacher, which is why so few are in the field in CA.

But you are 100% right if we're talking teachers in general.

Listening to the online group sessions has me like "wtf" with at least one girl in her class and this is for her Master's program. She graduates in a few months.

My wife has been in the district 12 years now, and though we're in different states, she will always be willing to lend some advice/help/etc. if you ever want to touch base.

Friends here will tell you just how passionate she is about teaching.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind for her.

She just left a private school for a public one out here and seems to be much more content with admin, at least. Less pay though, but she just needs to get through school so she can be a real teacher.

Her issue is the opposite; she's very good at what she does but the certification roadblock is still preventing her from progressing, despite her skills and experience. Her last job had her doing some of the duties of a SPED teacher, without the pay. Somebody with the certs would just sign/submit/forward her work, basically, from what I understood.

    Less pay but benefits.

Plus I don't know if it's the same out there but my wife gets a stipend for any credentials she has or certifications.

Because of the job, salaries for staff are publicly listed and she's one of few teachers at all making over six figures.

Only going to go up with her Master's then again when she gets her Doctorate.
