PICS-3rg GEN, 2-3 inch Lift, 255/85 or 265/75

OK folks, if you are up for lending some helping advice (and PICs), here is where I am:

I have a 2 in leveling kit, nothing fancy but it is time for new tires. I am on the fence between 265/75r16 and 255/85r16.

Bottom Line: I would love to see pics of your trucks with 2-3 inch lifts and either 225/85r16s or 265/75r16s and your thoughts on good/bad/ugly for the tire size you chose.

Some key notes about my driving:

If you are a straight mall crawler, I off road. If you are a rock crawler, I am a mall crawler.

My truck is a daily driver, but I spend a lot of time in the fall (some time the rest of the year) either hunting or scouting off of forest/logging roads. Nothing crazy. Could be some ruts, mud, fields, and a ditch or two, but nothing very technical.

I am looking for the aggressive looks, so leaning toward an M/T. I am not too worried about the effects on gas mileage. I haul a travel trailer or trailer with ATV a lot.

What I understand: I know M/Ts make more noise. So does my roof rack. And my radio

I know there are 6 million posts about tire size and I have probably looked through most of them over the past four years.

If you are up for posting your pics, that would be helpful to at least me. Maybe one or two others and would be appreciated.

For what its worth, I have 265/75 K02s on right now but I am torn between BFG and the Yokohama Geolandar G003s.

Good looking rig! How have the 'skinnies' been with towing? Are you towing the travel trailer in the pic? It looks pretty big for the Taco.

 

I only have a 1" lift so don't quite meet your criteria but these are 2 tire sizes I've debated. Currently on 265/75's. I think the 255/85's look alot better and I'd like to make the switch but I'm not satisfied with the available options. Yes, they'll be more noisy. Yes, they'll hurt your gas mileage. But they'll also hurt your acceleration/performance and your braking ability. All available options are significantly heavier than 265 options, which is why I'm sticking with the 265's.

I’m not sure where you’re located or if you would consider 285’s, but my g003’s are going to be for sale shortly. They’re in like-new condition, I’m just going a different direction with my build. Feel free to PM me if you’re interested.

 

I hear you. My BFG K02 265/75r16s are listed as weighing 53.6 lbs and the Yokohama Geolandars are listed as 54.9 lbs at 255/85r16. So, the pound of weight/tire doesn't sound too bad. As for sound, i do expect the noise to go up. Not too worried about gas mileage. But acceleration and braking are on the list of concerns. Thanks for the feedback.

 

Love my pizza cutters. They work great on and off-road. I can still get advertised mileage running 33”x10” E load tires. I’m lifted 2” by the way.

My next set will be a 255/80/17 as well.

 

Yeah that's not too bad. My wildpeaks only weigh 44 lbs so I'd be looking at a 10+ lb increase for any available option. 255/80/17 wildpeaks only weigh 50ish which isn't too bad but that would necessitate new wheels.

 

I have also considered the 285s but I am intimidated by the cutting/chopping. I am in North East NC.

I was worried about that also.

I surprisingly don’t have any rubbing at all on the road, even at full lock. Every truck is different especially since we have different wheels but if I was keeping them I would only need some minor trimming to have no rubbing while running them off road. Your truck may be different based on your setup, but just for what it’s worth.

I just saw this post…Do you do a lot of highway driving? If you do and you’re concerned about the impact on braking and acceleration then you may want to stick with an AT tire.

My g003’s are only about 5 pounds heavier than my grabbers and both are E rated, but I still noticed a pretty “noticeable” impact to acceleration and braking. Granted that is all subjective and maybe you wouldn’t think it was a big change.

I wasn’t expecting that because of the similar weight and the shared load rating.

although I’m drooling over the Toyo AT3 in 34x10.5r17… 33.5x10.5 at 55 pounds sounds like the perfect tire

 

I am guessing that is because of weight, but maybe more because of tire radius? I live in a pretty rural area, so not too much highway, but longer commutes on primarily 2-lane roads.

So did this equate to longer braking distances and more brake pad wear? Or was it noticeable?

 

I don’t think the weight was a factor because it was so close to my 265’s, I think it may have been radius and the super aggressive MT tread.

I’ve had them on the truck for less than 100 miles so I can’t speak to brake pad wear but the braking distance was definitely very noticeable.
