Can I put coilover and keep stock rear suspension?

    Hey everyone, new member and taco owner here.


    I want to get a 3” lift on my Tacoma and am planning on getting some coilover a with remote resi,

    my question is if I put a aftermarket coilover with a 3” lift, can I keep the stock rear and put a block? Or is it recommended to replace the rear shocks as well?

    What's the point of a nice resi shock in front if you're going to have a cheapo block in the back?

    I heard that rear blocks aren’t bad if you aren’t hauling extra weight or anything

    Shocks on the rear do nothing for your ride height.

    The "best" way to do it is new leaf springs - whether that is an Add-a-leaf (AAL) pack, like the Icon 3-leaf AAL or a full new one from Deaver, Alcan, Dobinsons, Old Man Emu, et al.

    But a block is ok. 3" may be pushing it. The issue with block lifts in the rear is that you'll probably encounter axle wrap and thunking/thudding from the rear end.

    The rear has a lot more motion and usually where to start with resi's (6112/5160)

    1" Blocks are fine on entry lifts, but what are your end goals?

    I associate resi's with moderate to hard offroading, or washboard/service roads.

    45% of the weight is on the rear when empty. You’ll want rear shocks to compliment the front.

    The purpose of adjustable coilovers with adjusters is to tune the trucks dampening and adjust ride height for optimal performance. A rear block does nothing but add height. Why would you want a stock shock that can’t keep up with the front?

    If you are just wanting height then throw on some cheap bilsteins in the front to go with your block.

    It’ll be mostly pavement, but I do want a good ride and be able to take on some hefty bumps off road,

    my eyes were on the RC vertex because they give an actual 3” lift in the front, is there other coilovers that are able to hit that 3” lift in the front ??

    All adjustable coilovers can hit 3” or even more but you aren’t going to get a good ride out of it. You lose down travel, maximum ideal ride height is usually around 2”. RC is probably one of the shittiest shock companies out there. I recommend doing some research here in the suspension threads and using the search function to understand how the Tacomas suspension works and then determine what you should really buy for it.

    Yeah I heard they’re terrible but I read a thread on the vertex and there were a lot of positive reviews of it.

    might just do bilsteins then, would you recommend 5100s or the 6112/5160 combo ?

    ls turbo, tons, 40's and a partidge in a pear tree
    3rd gens have a lot of rake. Put the front on and see how it looks. Then decide how much you want to lift the rear.

    Probably by a bunch of jamokes.

    We have a large bilstein crowd who can chime in on 5100s or 6112.

    If you have a budget in mind, most of us can piece a few options together for you.

    If you plan 3" in front as other said you should due more than just blocks in back. Plus you better plan on new UCA for the front. As Joe COVA mentioned RC is is bottom of barrel. I wouldn't install them, even if I got them for free.

    I wouldn’t do more than 2”
    On Toyota IFS. OME has a pretty affordable 2” lift kits. I’m running OME medium springs/shocks and dobinsons medium rear leafs (Dakars tend to squeak)

    Good ride on and off-road.
