I run a truck mounted, always powered, MXT275 with a 6db antenna mounted near the hood.

We have had excellent range with it. Comms from Young AZ up to the Mogollon Rim on an AZBDR trip years ago. Crystal clear comms from truck to truck in a variety of landscapes and terrain. @Sixthelement and I even chatted clear across Flagstaff back in the day, picking up hotel maids in the background.

The GMRS 'license' is easy to get, though I thought it was $70 for 10 years or something like that. You are just getting a call sign basically, and saying you understand very simple rules.

I think there's a guy in the valley that runs morning news if I remember right on one of the lower channels.

You legally need a license. You can operate under a friends license, but they are responsible for your actions while on GMRS.

You can be asked to provide your call sign if someone asks for it.

Likelihood of this happening? Near zero. But I prefer to play by the rules.

I have no problem getting a license, rather be safe and play by the rules. It's a lot of new info for me and weeding through it all. Appreciate the help fellas

Stuff that costs more than my wife thinks.
I honestly hasn't been that long for me, but I still had to look it up -- apparently prices have dropped from $70 to $35.

EDIT: Just logged into my FCC portal, it was $35.

Me and my buddy used ours the day we got it and tested it out and someone caught us on the station and informed us politely that we needed a license to operate so not impossible:rofl:

I had frost on the lawn in north Phx. Also had to scrape the window. I don't think that counts, though.

Jumping into it, applied for the license, I only assume for the reading they will send me verification and a call sign.? They took my money fast enough, but this site isn't user friendly for my simple computer skills! lol Will see

For GMRS license it's just a fee, no test.
Ham Radio Technician License requires the test

Theres some guys that run GMRS repeaters on the 16 channel in Payson and Phoenix. So, if you want to use them and bounce of them. You'll need your call sign. \
When I'm high enough and the right spot in Flagstaff I can catch the repeater in Payson and bounce to Phx. However I have the 50w Midland. When I had the 15w I used to pick it up but couldnt reach it to transmit.

    I've been looking into these.

What happens if you do not get a license? Just curious.
