Wow, its even on the Toyota.ca homepage. Must be a very tight production/allocation window for 2023s for our friends up north. I wonder if/when that will happen in the U.S.?

The Tacoma will not be unveiled at the 2023 Chicago International Auto Show. Grand Highlander is some 3 or so months ahead of that in reveal timing. I believe Toyota is targeting HQ event, in either May or June. That's my speculation. I did hear unofficially it is spring 2023 at the moment and likely May, which is 7-9 months before market launch. Whether that is NYIAS or their Plano event at HQ as suggested, not sure. Tundra was revealed so late, because of COVID and not standard operating procedure. Bear in mind, that the Tundra debuted in February 1998 as a thinly veiled prototype of the 1996 final design and went on sale in June 1999. Even the first brochure was printed in October 1998 and released by Dec 1998.

Second gen Tundra was February 2006, for end of January 2007 launch. So, you can see why Toyota only revealed just 3 months before launch. When you start seeing spy shots of a production body Toyota nameplate, get ready for a reveal in most cases a few months to a few weeks out.

Oooh, dats some '80s money boy...
LOL, my dad had one of those during his fellowship as a physician in 1992 coming from the UK, which was provided by the hospital and also a pager with that too. Later upgraded to the slightly smaller, Motorola MicroTAC by '94. I will never forget those days.

    s-l500.jpg motorola-microtac-led-1_medium.jpg d8dhdrg-58ba4233-1d3e-4c59-a639-c6470fa0e933.jpg

Yep, could knock someone out with those, without breaking it. Try doing that with an iPhone today and see if you still have a working device or one that isn't shattered.

    Very great question.

I don't know why people ever gave accolades to the outgoing GMC Canyon, as the interior is nothing impressive to me and the interiors are all the same, with no unique touches. Toyota has a more unique interior across trim levels, than they do. ZR2 had the blandest interior, for what it was. Ford, Toyota, and now Nissan do a better job of that. The 2nd generation Tacoma I consider to be the first smaller pickup to make an attractive interior and it knocked them all out. The 2005 interior was very carlike compared to the 1st generation vehicle, which was way more utilitarian. I'd consider myself in the middle of that Venn diagram, because I do recognize why it sells well, but I do question a lot about it and think it's because the nameplate never bowed out during segment decline and how the Japanese have fought hard to maintain a foothold in this segment. It was only the Frontier and Tacoma at one time, with no GMs and no Rangers. Nissan did the "new" truck too late, unlike Toyota who committed to that 6 years earlier than Nissan in 2015.

Of course Toyota is going to shine, but it's like everyone saw the 2005 Tacoma, the recession, and just gave up, hoping all of you would buy half-tons.

Ah, memories! I love old school stuff. I am such a car phone nerd!

I wanted my dad to get one of those so much in the 90s, but his little Chrysler LeBaron at the time had no use for it and he already had a hospital-provided MicroTAC cellular phone as department chief. Eventually by 2000, when he did get a car phone, it was a Jaguar (XJ) provided Motorola StarTAC IIRC and he resented using it over his CellularONE work/personal phone (same). Both were the same StarTAC, often being mixed up until caught the Jaguar logo. My mom got an E38 Bimmer at the same time with a StarTAC and was a much happy camper than he was, but couldn't use it with VoiceStream and she later got tired of that 4-5 years later. He rarely used that car phone and instead his work phone, which he of course didn't pay for directly LOL.

Only thing I hated though was, the newer setup in both cars and not like the old school full telephone setup (below). I liked this older style you would see in '80s/90s movies, where the fast talking lawyer or Mr BilliBucks slams down the corded car phone from the backseat and tells his driver, to rush downtown to the main office from the golf club pronto!
    Image00460.jpg 9nYBAk7N.D1ryZB1dn-(edit).jpg Used-1994-Jaguar-XJS-2+2-1651091553.jpg

I remember a lot of relatives and family friends had those kind of car phones in the '90s, while my parents didn't have a "car phone" until it was more of that semi-modern format using a wireless handset with handsfree. And of course, some of their brats (kids) would rub it in our faces. LOL, good times! A lot has changed since!

I think some of you out there in AZ, Colorado, Texas, and here in Michigan need to get your long lenses ready. They are definitely out there testing.

I generally do not comment on Ford product development plans nowadays, sorry. As for things Ranger, it's not my duty, but I am married to who has such duties (personal) and we work under the same employer, just different products. My work is a size class above this, but the problem is saying that gives me away too easily in terms of identity.

I don't like to be wrong, but I will reiterate this. As strictly a messenger and not the source of this, if you are ready to pay full price for a TRD Pro, I don't think's a concern at all. TRD Pro echoes the Tundra TRD Pro, but everything else is nothing to write home about in that department allegedly. The real mystery here is, has my source neglected to mention the petrol only T24A turbo? I hope not.

Yes, all of them will be. V6 will not be hybrid and RC62F will mate up right to that, if it fits just fine on TNGA-F. That was a maybe last time I heard.

Virtually the majority of my large vehicle collection is manual transmission. Only my large luxury sedans and half ton trucks have been automatic. I am in the process of acquiring an '01 BMW E38 740i M-Sport and converting that to manual or buying one like that already. It gets boring just playing with paddles, that depending on the vehicle can be overridden to easily by the computer. I never see my Tacoma, as it's down south at a vacation residence. I already commute in my manual Bronco and GT350 to work, since they are what get permitted in certain Ford-only staff parking areas. It's a long commute from Bloomfield Hills to Dearborn and back everyday. The Bronco is way more manageable than the Mustang, which I've decided to not be driving in the winter (even with the right tires).

I have a long commute from Northern Detroit suburbs into Dearborn and my Bronco Badlands Sasquatch manages the route everyday, not to different from my other Fords (autos). Although I never have driven my Tacoma to work up here, I have gotten somewhat a feel for it in El Paso and Albuquerque traffic, whenever I go down there and make use of it.

Well, when you go from 4-speed automatics as rudimentary torque converters to 10-11 speed automatics today, well you cannot be surprised how manuals have become inferior. Consumers for their own reasons focused on buying automatic in the USA and I've already touched on that topic elsewhere on TW. Accounting departments decided to fund less engineering for new manual boxes, thus everything pretty much got capped at 6 speeds, with few being 7 fully forward gears.

My first 4WD vehicle (D90) was manual in 2008, but I rarely got to drive it since it was in another country (England). The first one I had daily use of was automatic here only (W463) and proved to get very dull driving, even if a lot of power was on tap, since all you can do is press and go. No shift paddles. Plus, hardly even usable where I kept it anyway, without scratching it significantly. I made sure that whenever I could, I'd opt for a manual each time and something rugged as well. The sole exception in ownership of many vehicles over the past decade plus, have been my automatic Raptors of all generations. The first generation trucks had horrible tuning of the 6-speed automatic. Second and Third fixed that issue with our GM-shared 10AT, with shift paddles included.

I will not drive an automatic that doesn't give me the option of shift paddles, because I like to control my own shifting more often than not. The 2019 BMW 7-Series I had until about last year, was probably the only automatic non-truck I've bought for myself ever IIRC. This doesn't include fleet purchases or my spouse's own cars.

I here you on this and understand your plight. Someone has said that the V6 will offered for 2024 and it might have the manual standard for TRD trims, below the TRD Pro only. Nothing else IIRC. Now take that with a grain of salt, because I did also hear they were testing V35A-FTS in some of the mules and it didn't make the cut ultimately.

It will be one, because from what I am being told there will be too many engines offered. I don't want to be wrong and pay for it later, but that is what I've heard. 3 engines for the main line, 1 super hybrid for the TRD Pro a la Tundra.

Amen to that, must be nice.

Haha, I'll have to see about that myself.

Interesting, but unfortunately that doesn't always work on every vehicle. But then again, I haven't really tried that on my Tacoma, which I haven't seen in a very long time! Problem is with that, people will jump right in front of you with consideration, if not give you the stink eye for leaving a huge gap in front of you.

Very helpful information, seeing as 2023 production ends in November I last heard. Ordering for the 2024 Tacoma allegedly opens in September.

And bingo, that's just what I was about to state.

Wow, quite interesting to see honestly. With the base 2.7L, it will be much cheaper than $35k. Real curiosity are the alleged two hybrids being offered, which aren't new necessarily, but being used longitudinally for the first time apparently. I guess we'll continue to see about that.

I wonder if the 4th gen production will be delayed beyond Toyota's current forecast?

Extremely unlikely. It has been delayed before, although that was over a year ago, I doubt it. They have to stick to schedule when it’s this close. There’s a lot that goes into a new vehicle. All the regulations and such, but then manufacturing and suppliers. This is all pretty much done now that it’s this close. Toyota is basically working on fine details, mostly with manufacturing and not the vehicle itself.

I wonder how the Tacoma trd pro is going to stack up against the new ford ranger raptor, especially if it has the twin turbo 3.0 v6.

Will be interesting to see how the power figures compare if it has the turbo 4 hybrid max.

Thinking out loud but an AWD or Full Time 4wd Tacoma would be interesting. Engines would have plenty of power.

I don’t see that happening. Gas mileage would be terrible.

Have you driven a Tacoma ?

the Range Rover Sport with a supercharged 5liter v8 averaged 20% better than my Tacoma

The way Toyota operates, I don't think they care how Taco TRD will stack up against Raptor .

Yes, it’s already terrible. Imagine if it was AWD. I need a worse word than terrible. How about abysmal.

Right now I’m more exited about a possible ’24 Doge Ram N/A 3.6L hybrid than I am about a TOYOTA 2.4Turbo.
I don’t expect to be in the market until ’25-26 but looks like there won’t be a TOYOTA in my future, except for the used N/A ones.

“power will likely come from a 3.6-litre V6 paired with a 48V eTorque mild-hybrid system producing north of 305 hp”
