Went up visiting family for the Holiday so went out to see my Dad..

Scattered his ashes years ago on top of the hill in the background. This was/is our shooting spot for decades.. Was nice to be up there with him again.

So coming back down from the mountains over New Years I broke my 3rd S/C tensioner. Made it home luckily, but tore into it to fix and upgrade things so this hopefully wont happen again. Ordered an upgraded Tensioner from Steeda. Same as our trucks but for a Mustang, just has a chunk of billet burned onto it to help brace it and make it more rigid and eliminate the weak points in the casting. Just needed to modify (grind for clearance) the S/C tensioner bracket and trim the spring on the Steeda itself. Took the opportunity to replace all the bearings in the engine and S/C Idlers as well, including both tensioner pullies. I also wanted to be able to use a factory 5 rib S/C belt.. so I gathered parts to do the pulley wrap mod @BillDaCat8 came up with so I can run a factory 70.5" belt and not have to cut off any ribs. I also picked up 2 new belts, for the engine and S/C. Between all these fixes and upgrades, this should help prevent anymore stress in the system and hopefully help with any belt slip I was getting in the S/C system.. if I was getting any.

I pressed out and in all the bearings at the shop with the press, and gathered all the random hardware and parts I would need to reassemble. During the installation of the engine tensioner pulley, I set the torque wrench to the Spec'd 27ftlbs.. and it snapped the bolt. I even tested at 10ftlbs prior and it went fine. So.. reassembly stopped and a new engine tensioner ordered. I need to unbolt and move the Alternator and AC compressor to gain access to the tensioner bolts. I'll tear down everything, replace, reassemble, and install the new Steeda tensioner and do the pulley wrap mod last. Hoping to get this all buttoned up for KOH.

Spacers/washers were required to get the spacing correct with the new bearings for the Idler #1. You can see the old Idler #1 bearing has a sleeve that sits proud of the bearing race on each side. I had to add about .080" total of thickness to get the Idlers back into the correct spot. before and after below..

Might've been weakened over time from the 2 failures, or is this not for the S/C?

I'm curious to check the bolt after I pull the old one.. wondering if it bottomed out somehow into the tensioner body.. You can see how close it gets here on the new one.

Hey Josh ("Moose"? if I remember from back in the day)

Knowing that you went a route similar to this years ago I have a couple questions for you...

I'm thinking about starting a conversation with my wife about getting another vehicle as a daily and I have my eye on this:
    https://flagstaff.craigslist.org/cto/d/cornville-1985-toyota-pick-up/7572610417.html

    00E0E_c7JQLDUsfBqz_0CI0t2_1200x900_aa17087d79181553ce81176297b400ac9bd94fdd.jpg

Here are some questions for you since you've been down this road:
    • what are some things to look out for maintenance wise?
    • has your old pickup really been your daily driver?
    • anything you would do different if your were in my shoes and about to do this again?
    • what would you offer for this particular truck?

Hey dude! yeah you got it right.

That is a clean little truck for sure! body, paint and interior look great! It LOOKS like a 4 speed (W54), which isnt ideal, but for a commuter it might be ok. Unless you're planning on doing a lot of freeway miles. Might be screamin at AZ freeway speeds. Mine's a 5 speed (W55 Transmission). Stock Aisin Carb. Stock everything else drivetrain wise.

For reference.. I picked mine up 5 years ago with ~192k on it for 4K. Condition was similar to yours you posted.. maybe a little less than. I put probably another 500-1000 bucks into it right off the bat doing all the suspension, steering, tierods, brakes, etc. That was just to get it road worthy for ME, mechanically wise. (I obviously did some other cosmetics and stuff to it). Its been my daily ever since. Its got 212k+ miles on it now and runs great. I've driven it to Cali and back, Yuma and back, up north multiple times, etc. Roughly gets 25 mpg.

I did just put a whole new AC system in it recently. It finally died (had factory installed AC, its an AZ truck as well) and that was about $1500. Was a little hard to justify... and it took me a bit to decide on doing it.. but it is my daily and it was worth it. Probably a little ridiculous for some to spend that on an old truck that was only 4K... BUT.. your post is a prime example of why I justified it. I knew it would only help the value, especially with how these things are priced nowadays. I believe (and have thought about it) I could post mine for sale for that same ~8K price point.. and I think it would sell immediately.

My opinion on that pickup.. with it being a 4speed, the high mileage without AC AND at that price point.. I would probably pass. The best thing about that truck is the condition IMO.

BUT.. if you wanted to have a long term project that would also work for your needed purposes now.. that would be a great truck to do a swap down the road. 5 speed or even a W56. slap in a new AC system. freshen up the motor some (the 22r's will run forever, and with little to no oil, ask me how I know.. ) and you would have a great little truck! just that price..

Also looks like it doesnt have power steering. So the OG owner ordered it without AC and power steering. It also has a Weber carb it looks like.

Appreciate your perspective! This is exactly why I reached out.
Yeah I'm kicking around the idea of making this thing my around town commuter up here in Flagstaff.

I'm currently driving reletatively new to me 2018 Tundra (5.7L V8 4x4, picked it up a year and a half ago) as my around town commuter and I don't really like putting the miles on it like that.
The Tundra has been great for pulling a my trailer around, but I don't need all that power all the time.
