After I got my Alu Cab shell, I wanted to save more space by putting my tire up on one of the bed rails nearest the cab. I wanted it in the cab for security, but most of all for proper weight distribution. I don't wheel my truck hard enough to justify a high clearance rear bumper, nor do I want the weight of one. I carry a mountain bike regularly so a hitch mounted carrier was not in the cards either.

There's an option or two out there, but they are pricey, and the companies don't offer any decent amount of customer support.

Got in touch with Bash Fab (aka @01Tac0ma) to see if he could custom fab something up.

The end result turned out awesome, super solid and at a much better price than anything else. This is with a 285/75/17 (34") tire.

The reason for this post is two-fold, 1. It's tough to find anyone willing to make you something that they don't currently make/stock. 2. He's looking for a few people to test this before production starts.

I like that they actually made the depth adjustable.

    Look at build!
It looks fantastic mounted in there! I really prefer the clean look of the lugs plus having some extras on hand. Setup is a bit of a pain but one set not too bad to put the spare on.. Need 5 testers! I have 2 so far if anyone wants to get.in on it. They will be $150, $50 off what they'll retail for

To be honest it wasn't that bad at all and I'm currently in a cast from the knee down. Soooo if I can do it, anyone can.

I bolted the tire carrier to the wheel first, and left all the bedrail bolts loose. Much easier to line up one square vs 3 wheel studs. Once I got that on, the bed rail bolts being loose let me slide the carrier into final position. I tightened up the bed rail bolts and then the depth adjustment bolts and all was good.

I’d probably also run a strap either across the tire or from the bed floor over the tire with that style mount. A defunct fabricator made something like this for 2nd gens and over time it will beat the crap out of the bedrail.

Looks great, very interested as I am in the same predicament with a high clearance / need to use the hitch for MTB/Boat.

Ya unfortunately the bed rail is pretty flimsy and held in with a few torx bolts. But I have the tire buried into the bed and the passenger wheel tub area the best I can, so effectively the bed rail is only holding the tire from tipping over, not supporting all of the weight. Still going to be safe and run a Mac's tie down from the passenger bed tie down point, to a bracket on my Alu Cab shell. Should turn out nice, be a little custom, and provide plenty of extra support.

I am definitely interested. recently installed archive hammer hangars and have no better way to carry around a spare with me especially on trips. How do I get in on the testing?

ARE Z-series shell, ImMrYo mirror lift, always on fog-lights.
I would watch out with this kind of mounting if you are off-roading at all. Shelby did a similar mount on their Raptors and they have been tearing apart the bedsides with off-road use. One of them made it less then like 50 miles in Baja before the both bedsides were torn.

This is not even close to the same situation.

In the case of the Shelby tire mount on their chase racks, the entire weight of the tire is supported by the rails. Basically one huge cantilever as that tire moves up and down. The wheels/tires are hovering over the bed. Terrible design.

With this product, the tire weight is supported by the bed. The bed rail mount is just to prevent the tire from tipping over.

EDIT: With that said, if you're driving 60mph in the desert in your Tacoma, this is not the solution, but you already know that.

They don't come standard on the 3g's, but the 2g part bolts right up. Was one of the first things I added to mine and the most useful place for a rail to be IMO IDK why they removed it.
