Short Tube Headers

What do y’all think about these short tube headers for the 4.0? Guy says they’ve never been mounted and comes with gaskets. almost a 2 hour drive to go get them. Only wants $180 and was made at a local shop, but welds look good. Any ideas if these are alright? Thanks.

 

That'd be a pretty good deal for some American made headers.

Are you sure they were made locally? The manifolds in that ad looks similar to the generic 1GRFE headers mass produced in China and sold on ebay for $100.

ask the seller what local shop, call ‘em up and ask if they can make you a set of headers for your Toyota… then you oughta know

If you're going to do headers, mine as well go with LT headers to make it worth it.

 

^^^^what this man said. Especially if you live in a state/county that does not have emissions laws that would make LTs illegal.

 

Even 180 for china headers isn't a bad deal lol

How do you plan to connect them to the y-pipe? Are you going to weld a flange on them?

 

These are short tubes. You need to cut off the factory cats and then weld them to the aftermarket headers. Then you're able to connect them to the y-pipe.

Unless you have exhaust design/plumbing/welding experience, I wouldnt undertake this install yourself.

@Tanner.b16 I'll be honest, my gut tells me that the person advertising those headers bought them for a LOT less than two bills and is now trying to flip it for $180. IMO, any professional/commercial exhaust fabrication shop in the USA will NOT be able to produce a set of custom aftermarket tubular (shorties) EX manifolds for anything less than $1k. No booger welds, no crush bent piping, etc.

so these Chinese headers any good? i mean back in the Honda days use to buy ebay headers for $40 all the time they were awesome and cost like 1/3 the cost of the least expensive header at the time and flowed just fine

 

if you are in the market for aftermarket short tube headers for your early 1GR-FE single vvti engine....... then these chinese headers should totally be considered. But with any mass produced header thats made in China, you may need to clean up the welds or grind down those weld boogers or even possibly even deck the manifold face of the flange so its flat/true. But if you were part of the Honda game back in the days, you should know about the caveats with the copycat exhaust stuff.

$550 for the Doug Thorley short tubes

you can decide what's good for your budget and build.

Material costs alone are more than the cost of those headers. If made here. The welds will crack. Just a matter of time, based on how well the exhaust is supported. Chinesium "304 stainless" at that price, is not the actual grade of 304 stainless.

Better do it fast. I just talked to Gadget from URD trying to get a set of their Spec-U headers. No dice. EPA hounds scared him enough to pull EVERYTHING that isn’t carb legal off his virtual shelves. Just a matter of time until others follow suit.
