It is a known issue among TacomaWorld users. I doubt it is much of a concern for Toyota. There has been no Recalls on it...

    https://www.cars.com/research/toyota-tacoma-2017/recalls/

(Didn't know what year OP has, so I did my own)

If there was a recall, then there would be an improved part in subsequent model years, there isn't. Also, unless these catch a number of trucks on fire ( re: Canadian Engine Block Heater Recall ) then they will leave it as it is.

In the meantime, Toyota hopes you enjoy you Qi charger, it was outsource from the rejects of Amazon and Walmart. High quality.

I used mine once on a trip to Portland, I was bluetoothing music, and the thing kept beeping. It kept cycling from charge, to off and back to charge because the phone battery was full. I shut it off and haven't used it since, that was over 4 years ago. Today, I plan on using the circuit for upgrades, permanently disabling it.

Thanks for all the responses. From what I gathered here I’m taking it out completely and throwing a storage cubby. Anyone have the part # for the oem one?

I meant I’m not going to replace the wireless charging feature at all. Is there a different part for a storage cubby without the Qi charger?

    Yeah.
Mine works through an Otterbox, but it doesn't charge very fast and gets hot. I usually just use a cable, which charges much faster anyway.

The Qi charger in the Tacoma has got to be one of the biggest technology fails Toyota has put into production. Never worked for me. Cooked the phone.

    Yup! @Buck Henry

    That's Buck Henry alright! LOLOLOLOL

I've used mine...sparingly, for charging...but not for more than 30 minutes at a time.

The darn phone gets very HOT!

I don't put anything but receipts or my reading glasses in there...and God forbid any water gets in there!

Since I bought my toggle thingy for Bluetooth connectivity for AppleCarPlay, I can place it on the platform and charge it while using GoogleMaps.

It's not a recall, it's a TSB. Those generally only apply if you're under warranty.

Mines been deformed since I picked the truck up off the trailer with 4 miles on it, but been too lazy to get it replaced. I'd rather just have a pocket there instead.

I believe you need to buy the entire part of the center console that holds the charger to get the non-trd pocket. It’s like $135.

This is correct. The cubby is a part of the front center console and not a available seperately. Used consoles show up on Ebay from time to time, but I've never seen one with the cubby or QI charger.

I use mine and it works ok but I take the phone off of it when the battery is fully charged assuming it doesn't overheat while doing so. I put down two popsicle sticks as an air buffer to get some air circulation under the phone. That seems to help the overheating a bit. One would have thought that they would have some 'cooling' system to work with it. My other QI chargers at home have fans.

They deform from the heat produced by literally anything.

Using the charger makes them deform faster, but I never used mine (otterbox case on my phone) and it deformed in 18 months / 30k miles just from the natural heat of the vehicle being parked in the sun in Colorado.

I've used mine probably twice since the truck was new, have never left the power on for it and it's still blown up like a balloon. All I want is a flat space to store whatever...
