I just found an used axle and threw it in there. I think they are Yukon's. I'm 4.56 with 32" tires. I'm going 10 mph slower than what my truck actually says at high speeds. I want to change my gears again soon for more torque and found gears for $200 and quoted $300 for install.

I found a complete 3rd member with factory 4.10 gears and bolted it in there. that is stock gearing for the 5sp 4wd or prerunner with a 4 cyl. I have 265/70 r16 tires same as a 4wd. I like it.

I use this as a reference, but for a 05+ 5 lug it's pretty hard to a third with gears. 5 lugs are an 8" diff for the +05, and non locked 6lug are 8.4" diff and aren't interchangeable with 8". You share the same gears as the e-locker tacomas. I'm not sure if an e locker third will bolt into your diff.

This is if you want to stay with the 5 lug rim in the rear.

My third came from a '96 tacoma 4x4 non trd 4.10, there is alot of conflicting info about these rear ends but as I understand...

-All 4wd/prerunner non trd e-locker 96up tacomas have the 8.4 rear diff.
    -At least 05up 2wd 5lug tacomas have the 8.4. Maybe '03, '04 too?
    -T100 pickups all years.
    -Tundras '01-'06

I think at least the '96up 4cyl manual trans 4wd, prerunners had 4.10 gears, the ring gear will have the ratio etched into it, or you could just spin the tires up on jackstands.

The one problem I had with the '96 third going into an '08 was the pinion flange had a different bolt pattern so I had to swap them

I disagree, I thought 05up 5lugs and 6lugs (non elocker), were the same. I hear it called 8.4 although the ring gear actually only measures 8" in diameter. The e-lockers were 8" but its a different setup I thought?

Sorry about that . Yes the 05+ 5 lugs are 8.4" not 8". I responded to that a little too late at night.

Nope non locking and e-lockers can't switch. If looking for a locker most people go for limited slip. You can find good used 8.4" thirds for around $200-250. Place a wanted add on a few of the desert forums when ready to buy one.

Ok lets say i found a tacoma rear axle complete with a locker from an 05 + tacoma. Could i just slide in my axles to keep the 5 lug pattern? Or do they have a different spline count and im guessing since the lockers are 8" they would be a little shorter than the 5 lug 8.4" ??? Or is the 8.4 referring to the size of the diff?

I though you were looking to re-gear? But wms to wms(wheel mounting surface) is the same. I believe both splines match up so you can run your axles. If you are looking for a deal stay away from the elockers. You'd have to buy gears because 4.10s aren't stock in elockers and need to buy a stand alone kit to make the locker work $150.

Ok so it would be cheaper to just buy gears and a locker than? I was thinking if I could find a complete axle and just install that would be so easy but guess there's nothing out there then to do that with 4.10 gears huh?

I'd place a wanted add on dezertrangers, racedezert, or ttora. Make sure you are specific about what you want. A whole bunch of people emailed me when I was looking for a new axle. I got a pretty good deal on my axle. Mine is fully trussed with 4.56, and lsd with only 500 miles on it since last rebuild and gears for $500 and I'm still 5 lug. Not sure where you are located but all this stuff is in CA. Other forums like pirate4x4 is more state wide.
