So, talk me off a cliff, but what if the next gen Ranger Raptor had me tempted to not buy a 4th Gen Taco... :anonymous:

    and lets talk why...

-3rd Gen Taco payload is trash -- as I spec out additions to my current rig, I have finally accepted I will exceed the GVWR once I add a combination of the following (1 passenger, and their crap, and a dog; 2 passengers plus no crap; 1 passenger and their crap, plus one 5 gal water jug; no passengers but lots of crap in the bed; if I tow literally anything).

-This rendition of the Ranger allows an easier time swapping front/rear bumpers, with no/minimal cutting.

    -Stock 33's?

-It does look like Ford Performance actually does additional engineering with the suspension, as opposed to "Oh, lets put 2.5" Fox shocks on the TRD Pro and call it a day"...

    Am I wrong?

If these photos turn out correct the dog leg in front of the rear wheels will get pelted with antiskid in the snow belt and rocks on gravel roads in a short time.

I'd have to find the link to it but I also remember reading they're teaming up with ARB for "Ford approved" accessories like high clearance bumpers.

Sounds like cost is bewtween $800-$1500 depending on if u want the whole front end or if you plan to put on a heavy steel bumper.

I am very excited about the next generation Ranger. It's getting decent press in the rest of the world where it's already on the roads. It will be interesting to see what powertrains we get here. I was hoping @Carmaker1 would shine some light on this, but don't blame him for keeping quiet.

My father in law has a '19 Ranger and it's a pretty decent truck- in several ways I think it's nicer than my '23 Tacoma. I know I sound like a broken record but the main reason I went with the Tacoma was because it serves as place-holder that will have good resale in a few years when it's replaced with a better truck. Of course the other option is that I keep it forever as a third vehicle and buy something sporty for everyday use.

    @Carmaker1

Thank you for the insight, as always. Unfortunately it’s increasingly obvious to me those with the least amount of information feel the need to have the loudest voice. This tends to go across many topics on here and elsewhere.

I used to be pretty good at tuning out the BS but it gets louder daily and I find myself engaging in it more than I’d like to, I don’t know how you do it.

I have to wonder the patent truck is the higher trim model / lifted “off-road” (be it Pro or better) model as looking at the rocker panel relative to the the wheel and tire it seems higher than my truck when it was stock and roughly equivalent to my truck now that it’s lifted. Maybe it’s just an illusion.

Either way I’m sure Toyota will sell a bunch of these. If they’re still making this body style in 2031-32, I’ll be grabbing one. I’m hoping to get 15 years out of my current truck, so we shall see.

You want us to talk you out of buying an upcoming not-yet-for-sale vehicle in favor of another upcoming not-yet-for-sale vehicle? o_O There could be fuckups from either brand. I'd give both models a couple of years to work out the bugs (and Ford to finish its obligatory 11 fiery death recalls) before making a decision.

Buy whatever is the best truck available. I’m not married to any brand. If the Tacoma goes to a turbo 4 I have no desire to stick with them.

Serious question: Toyota can't keep up with demand, how is the Tundra a dud?

I hope this is the new US Tacoma and am interested in what the engine options will actually be. I don't have time to dig through 92 pages to see if @Carmaker1 actually told us yet.

What is the Payload going to be on the US version of the Ranger Raptor?

Exactly. If they all have similar engines then what does Toyota have over the competition? They will lose their long life dependability and all the trucks look pretty similar these days anyways.

Why does a turbocharged engine suddenly mean Toyota's "long life dependability" will be compromised?

That’s the nature of a small high revving turbo engine vs the current low revving basic engines in the current and past models.

Nope, sorry, that explanation doesn't hold water. The fact is, a "small high revving turbo engine" can easily be designed to last as long, or longer than revving engines, if not longer.

    A few points:
    • Depending upon the torque curve, a turbocharged engine will typically need to operate at lower RPMs to produce any given amount of power compared to a similar normally aspirated engine producing the same power (assuming relative parity in total engine output).
    • Engineering for longevity/reliability for engines with higher output per unit of displacement is a well understood science, a science I have every confidence Toyota is well versed in.
    • Using a generality regarding smaller engines is a false narrative.

Do you have any examples of these small turbo engines that are lasting 200-300K miles with no repairs other than changing the oil and spark plugs?

I got 225,000 miles out of my 1985 Dodge Daytona Turbo with only coolant changes, oil changes, filters, and spark plugs; the engine was still running strong and not consuming any oil when the rest of the car rusted away.

Any examples with modern vehicles? I’ve owned turbo vehicles as well as family and friends. High mileage was not expected with any of them.
