DIY Bedliner

Anyone ever done a spray in bedliner themselves? Is it worth just having it done professionally or is DIY feasible?

 

I did it almost 2 yrs ago. Good prep is the key. Still looks pretty good. 4 rattle cans did the job. Good luck

Do it with a roller. Agree with @jarvis, prep is important.

But there's no reason to pay Linex prices or invest in spray gear to do the inside of the bed.

I'm not sure where you are located but I have a plastic drop in bed liner for sale for $50 for a 6' bed I took out of my 2003 standard cab 2WD MT Tacoma if you want to purchase a used one. I'm in NW NJ and the bed liner is fine. I only removed it to have a rhino liner sprayed in. Needless to say, it doesn't hold up nearly as well as the plastic liner. I used Herculiner on a previous truck, which is a roll-on product - not the same but in terms of affordable DYI solutions, held up better than expected. Required a touchup coat every 2yrs, but i work in construction and was hard on it.

 

I herculined a truck once too. Used twice the recommended amount and it held up well. Prep is key. Scuff then acetone. It stuck to the paint so well that when I got rear ended, the paint flaked off the bare metal first with the herculiner stuck to it. It was a hard surface still though, not soft like rhino or lineX.

 

Depends on what you're going to be doing with it and how much you want to invest in it. I've used Herculiner bc it was available locally, easy to touch up, and made by JB Weld. If I had to do it over I would probably go with Durabak or Raptor. Herculiner works decent for the price and is easy to repair but it isn't the most durable. All that said I don't regret using Herculiner.

 

Used bully liner on mine. It works fine for my use. Cleans up with water, no fumes.

 

It all comes down to doing the best prep work you can!!

I think being the owner you will do a much better job.

The goal of any shop doing any work is to make money the faster the turn around the more $$

Like anything always going to be exceptions.

 

I'll put a vote in against Herculiner. While it was cheap, and DIY friendly (and I think the only DIY product available 20 years ago), It's giving me nightmares to remove in prep to put something else in it's place.

 

Is bead blasting an option ??

 

Like having it professionally done? I was just going to buy a ton of the poly abrasive wheels from Amazon pull the bed, put a tent over it, and just hate life for a few hours.

 

Some places if you don`t own a bead blaster renting might be an option .

I would not force my worst enemy to do that job by hand.

Same boat with Raptor liner, but I'm going to try the rotating jet thingy for my pressure washer. Pretty confident that will work

 

When I redid my bed liner a few months ago, I found that the wire wheel was much better than the poly wheels. Just my experience
