JBL Premium Upgrade. Replacing speakers and subwoofer.

All the piggyback units are no good from everything I've seen. Then also think of the screen resolution. Then alot of jumping back and forth for audio.

What are your sound settings at? Treble, mid and bass?

 

One more reason to upgrade the amp and HU yo JBL Entune 3.0 2020+

My current settings are basic. Sometimes I'll fade to the rear and balance to the left, but it's usually one click up on the high and bass, one click down on the mids.

 

Soooo glad that I stumbled across this site and particularly this thread.
Have spent days researching trying to find info on the 2021 JBL system.
Going with the same setup as Ryan, but going cheap with an NVX 6x9 2 ohm component set ($99),
Just to use the 6x9 woofer.

I'm noticing these settings are for xm, and Spotify doesn't sound as crisp, with too much bass. I may need to mess around with the Spotify Eq and the HU Eq to get more desirable results

 

I just replaced my front door speakers with 3-way jbl 6x9’s expecting to get more vocals and highs out of the doors but now realize the amp must only send low frequencies to them. What are my options for getting them to play full range? Replace the amp, replace head unit, some kind of bypass???

 

Sorry, I personally haven't heard of any quick solutions to get 3-way front door speakers to perform with the JBL system I think even the OEM Audio plus uses Subwoofers there.

 

the lower door is not a good position for off-axis higher frequencies. while firing up from the dash isn't the best alternative, Toyota isn't wrong to put wide bands there and leave only lower frequencies for the doors.

edit: not that that addresses the question now that you have those speakers. i think the only way to redistribute the frequencies would be some sort of channel summing, like an AmpPro or similar. but then you'd have to install something downstream to prevent sending a full spectrum signal to all the speakers.

 

Are you sure their just not hitting a crossover point and thus stopping the high frequencies from going any higher?

 

Yeah they are but I don’t know how to get rid of it. You can kind of hear like muddy vocals but it’s basically just bass and no highs.

 

Have you replaced the tweeters in the dash?

I tried the 3-way in the door. My solution was to install the correct 6x9 woofers

I have not replaced the dash tweeters do you think it’s worth it, I didn’t find the door speakers to be worth the upgrade

 

For the door speakers I honestly don’t want any bass in the doors. I have a 12” ported sub so it’s plenty and the door speakers basically just add rattling in the front doors. That’s why I got the 3 ways hoping for more highs but didn’t realize the crossover.

 

Yes, it's worth replacing the dash tweeters 100%. If you'd like doors to have 3-way, then you may pull from the back doors for full spectrum, but the fade and the power will be off... Or, do it right, and strip the JBL system...

 

I think I’ll just do the tweeters then and call it good. Was than volume output any better with the tweeters or just clarity?

 

Both. The speakers sound clearer at low volumes, so louder. Max volume is still capped at 60 or whatever.

 

I'm new to audio but now very interested in upgrading my system after running into this thread.

I'm a bit confused by this setup. The infinity kappa comes with 3 items. The main speaker, a tweeter, and a crossover? Are you just using the main speaker and junking the rest? If not, how do you wire all of this? Thanks for your info on this.

Also images of you multitooling your subwoofer box, is it to expand the entire diameter?

 

My plan is to use the tweeters and crossovers to daisy chain off the dash speakers, and do a sail fin installation like here. But otherwise, yes, you're not using the tweeters or crossovers. Only the 6x9 woofer for the front doors. The JBL system should be less expensive and they're the same speakers.

Also, for the multi tool, we are simply removing the bump in the picture , so the speaker sits flush. The woofer drops right in even with those bumps.

 

Read through this thread and think I have it narrowed down to two options on door speakers for my 2013 W/JBL. I will be definitely be going with the Rockford Fosgate -

P3SD2-8 for the sub. Here are the door speakers I am looking at.

option 1:
JBL GTO960C = front doors using only the 6x9 and tweeter. Trash the crossover.

$100 JBL GX628 GX Series 6.5" 180W Peak Power 2-Way Coaxial Car Loudspeakers (Pair)

JBL GX628 = rear doors.
With the JBL I see the specs for the 6X9 2.5ohm and 94db sensitivity. The 6.5" specs are 2.3ohm 92db sensitivity. Being that they are not a true 2ohm speaker would this be a noticeable loss in volume? or does the more efficient speaker (db) sensitivity make up for the loss in ohms?

option 2:

DS18 PRO-ST 1.9" = Front door tweeters 4ohm 98db
Powerbass OE-652 6.5'' Full Range = rear doors 2ohm 88db

The powerbass option would give a 2ohm set up with the exception of the 4ohm tweeters. But less speaker sensitivity.

Thoughts ? comments .... option 1 or 2 also cost wise both would be right around $250 TIA

 

the 2.5ohm specification is generally a manufacturing spec. the real product measurement might be a little lower, or a little higher. in my experience, most speakers are within about 1 ohm of the mfr spec's, usually biased towards just under the stated spec.

i don't believe that the oem speakers have a published spec for sensitivity, so it's impossible to know well they'll compare. they should be pretty close though.
