He said he was driving the speed limit, but that varies a lot by state. Honestly, he needs to let the engine get good and broken in first - at least 10,000 miles. It makes a difference. Not using cruise control at all and especially not using adaptive cruise makes difference, and, in addition keeping a steady throttle and letting it slow down on the hills matters a lot, as does anticipating the next hill and using the downhill to get free momentum. He said he dropped the tire pressure down to 30 psi. That will negatively effect fuel economy. I run 40 psi and have no issues with the ride and according to my Mitutoyo digital caliper's depth gauge, the tires are wearing very evenly. I never worry about city driving mpg as it's so variable and I make a lot of short trips, but highway mileage at the 70mph speed limit is usually in the range of 23-26 mpg but wind and hills play a big role in that.

Seriously... this topic is being overthought way too much. It's a truck. Go out and use it for what it's intended. Enjoy it and don't stress about mileage. Just my two cents.

I just drove from Denver to Des Moines at about 75 mph most of the way. I averaged 22.4 mpg.

Complaints about Tacoma gas mileage reminds me of when my sister had finished her first year teaching grade school. She was upset, rethinking her career choice and said, “Teachers don’t get paid enough.”

News flash!!!! Did you not pick that info up the entire 22 years you were in school and hell bent on becoming a teacher.?!.?.?!

OP’s complaint rings the same. No duh.

upload_2023-1-26_12-37-43.jpgNot to flex on you but here was my drive to a jobsite yesterday. Speed limit, right lane, coasting up to red lights. If you pussy foot the skinny pedal these trucks aren't half bad. I have a 2" level kit and 32" tires. Minimal weight in the truck with me.

Parts of Texas have legal speed limits of 80 and 85. The Tacoma gets shit mpg at those speeds. Or so I hear…:D

Just don't tow a travel trailer! Does your truck bed have a cover? That may help a little?

As far as fuel economy, its pretty accurate what Toyota claims for these trucks as long as the tires have at least 32 psi, you only drive the truck in warm weather while keeping the speeds under 60 mph. Doing that I will average nearly 23 mpg. Even going 70 mph I'll still get 22 or a little better.
