JL Audio 6X9's - will they fit

I am going to replace my 6X9's in the door. Does anyone know if JL Audios 6X9s will fit without any modifiactions? I have a 09 tacoma 4 door. I will probably also replace the rear 6 1/2 with JL too.

 

damn i just tried looking at crutchfields "outfit my vehicle" to try and help and they don't even have 09 tacoma listed yet!

 

I know...I tried to look it up under an older model 2007 and they said it does not fit but I am not sure if that is accurate.

 

I think they will fit with the right mount for them. I looked at the mounts on ********* and got some pointers for my planning on their site

 

What model JL's are they?

 

I was looking at the two pairs they have at crutchfield
TR690-TXI or VR690-CXI

Mr MARV...you seem like the guy who knows his stuff. What do you think about these JL Audio speakers? If you dont like them what do you recommend? One shop I have always gone to since high school recommends the Boston but they are almost $300. These JL's are both under 200. I was leaning towards the TR690 but I dont mind spending a few extra dollars if the quality is worth it.

I checked JLs website and i think they are both a little over 3" deep.

 

Personally I'm not a fan of the TR however the VR is a very nice speaker IMO. Drag is they are too deep to fit without some cutting which you already mentioned you do not wish to do. Quick question if I may, are you set on 6x9's because you are not going to use a sub?

 

Agreed 3" depth is going to be a big headache that i doubt you want to tackle. As for the JL full range speakers, I for one dont think they sound good but then again I have Marv's taste but will diasagree about the VR, I still dont care for the tweet. As for 6x9 speakers, the really only one i do like is the Image Dynamics XS69 comp set but they are more than likley out of your budget. In your case I would recommend a good 6.5" comp set and there all kinds of good choices out there for any budget. Some I would recommend would be the Phoenix Gold RSD as the cheapest to the Image Dynamics CTX then the Pioneer 720PRS then then Image Dynamics XS65 or XS69 or from what I hear as probably one of the best values out there for what your get is the Hybrid Audio Clarus set but budget again gets involved. As I have been typing I have thought of alot of great 6.5" sets but if your going that direction it is best to go out and DEMO DEMO DEMO all kinds of sets. I or Marv would be more than happy to help you out if you wwant to get indepth with your goals, budget, and power applied to your new drivers. Marv and I know each other well and sometimes I am sorry to say we are both addicted to the car audio hobb.....habit.

 

i'm going to hijack this topic a little since 6.5" have been mentioned...

with keeping the stock 2008 JBL head unit what 6.5" component speaker set would you recommend for the front door panels of a Double Cab?

MARV - Yes I was thinking about 6X9s because I was not going to add a sub but if I cant get a good pair of 6X9s in the front door then I might rethink my sub. In my 2000 tacoma I replaced all speakers with Boston and had a 10W3 JL sub in an extended cab and it was great. When I bought my new truck I thought I could get away without a sub but now I am thinking I may just install 6 1/2 all the way around and add a 8" sub.

Here is a question...would it be easier to install a sub and new 6 1/2 or do some modifying and stick with 6X9's in the front????

Some people would be fine with the 6x9's for bass (there are others that would not require cutting) however it sounds like you had a really nice system with a sub known for nice bottom end in the 2000 so I have a feeling you would miss that. Since you did like that system I would suggest doing something similar in this truck. I am a fan of the "KISS" principle and have done countless "simple systems" on a budget that sounded great/were well balanced using just a nice set of 6.5 components up front with a single 10" sub all powered by a single 4 channel amp (installed properly of course!) If you like rear fill and budget does not allow for 2 "nice" sets of speakers I would suggest getting the "best" speakers within your budget up front and a less expensive set for the rear powered by the headunit or foregoing the rear until budget allowed (the front speakers are the most important in any system IMO and even if budget did allow for 2 "nice" sets of speakers I personally would go up to an even "better" set of speakers in the front )

 

Agreed, your better off spending the money on a better set of speakers up front and leave out the rears. If you had a JLw3 before I doubt you will be happy "subless" for long. I would invest in a nice 6.5" set up front and a sub.

 

This is what i always do! simple, easy and sounds great. when a system is set up this way, you really can't notice the "fill" of the rears anyway.

BTW, check out MBquart. They still make a damn good speaker even after Maxx bought them.

Also, i put two image dynamics 10"'s in my Saleen vert and they really put out some nice bass. not as good as jl subs though.

One word of advice, buy THE best amp you can afford. IMO, you can't do wrong with a Zapco!
