So how bad do you think a turbo replacement is vs. a timing cover re-seal (2GR), VVTi gear replacement (2GR), cracked exhaust manifold replacement (2UZ), or a basic clutch replacement that requires pulling the transmission and transfer case? :) Many components in a vehicle can fail and be difficult/expensive to fix. No need to specifically avoid a turbo.

I get your point but from what i know the 3VZE was a NA engine and is the most notorious problem child engine toyota produced (many not making it past 180k miles). Im just curious as to why many people believe toyota cant make a turbo engine reliable enough to make it past 200k miles when its been established that they most certainly can historically. I will absolutely agree that i trust there hybrid technology to be quite reliable but i would also agree that they can make a forced induction engine as reliable as a naturally aspirated one, otherwise i dont think they would put forth the effort into engineering one.

Agreed, all of this hand-wringing/the-sky-is-falling conjecture over how a new engine may not have good longevity or good reliability is just silly. Folks, why not just wait for the real thing to come out and gain some experience on the roads; then you can make your determination whether it is an engine you want in one of our vehicles.

Hell ya, I miss my XSE. I had talked myself out of a tacoma when I bought my rav. Turns out I ended up wanting something a bit more capable and kinda took my XSE out of its orginal design parameters...

The 7M-GTE was the reason I refused to buy any Toyota for nearly 20 year(2001-2020). I gave up on my 89 Supra after 3 head gaskets and electrical problems from hell. With that said, I think the whole philosophy on turbos changed over the past 20 years, and they are whatever future the internal combustion engine has left.

I don’t consider that high mileage. Maybe back in the 80’s or 90’s but every vehicle made today should easily hit that mileage. 200+ is what I start to consider high mileage.

I don’t think that’s true. They do run hotter and the point of a turbo is to add boost to an engine. Both of those things take a toll on the engine and all of its moving parts. Turbos fail and are expensive to replace. That’s a fact. You can have oil supply line failures and inter cooler failures. Also a fact. All of these things make it more difficult and more costly to run that engine to high mileage. This is why people, myself included will not run a turbo vehicle to high mileage. It’s not worth the headaches or cost.

This thread is gonna look funny when Toyota just plops a 3.4 NA in the 4th gen and calls it good.

It is once again clear you don't understand how a turbocharged engine operates. Fact, they operate at exactly the same temperature as a normally aspirated engine. You can throw all of the noise you want, it is irrelevant.

So you make an utterly irrelevant claim and I respond in kind, and you call it throwing rocks? Okay then.

Oh man, if they put the non turbo 3.4 with a 10 speed in it I might actually switch. Doubtful, though.

I'd just like to say that I find it strange that the info or "leak" came from a forum with 58 members and owned by VerticalScope who has purchased forums like advrider.com and pirate4x4.com :notsure: Although, @Carmaker1 seemed to debunk the whereabouts of this info, something definitely seems fishy to me. Like it's a play by VerticalScope to lure members to their new forum. Coincidence? The forum member who posted the info has never been found on the interwebs except for creating content on that new forum. On a side note, I hope TacomaWorld never sells out. :pout: @tcBob
