Going to try this evening with a different scanner, but my ancel scanner won’t connect. It turns on and gets power but starts loading and is unable to link. 02 Tacoma, any idea what this could mean??

Try turning the truck on, I mean running. That's what I have to do. Should work then :)

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
I always double check the device works on another vehicle.

It can be corroded on the truck plug

Pins might not be connecting correct.

The MIL light does come on with the ignition on?

thanks guys. i tried my friend's obd scanner and it showed me a p1135 code. but the check engine light is off when the ignition is on, an so is my temperature gauge on the instrument cluster is permanently malfunctioning (no movement on gauge with engine or ignition on). so i've gotta take my cluster out and inspect it. maybe my scanner isnt compatible or the pins are bad in it, but it did work in my jeep.

Is the Temperature gauge pegged hot or cold

I would check the sending unit first.

Unless you suspect rodent damaged wires behind the dash

If you have a 3.4L V6, as you are facing the engine, it's located on the left side, under the front of the fuel rail, behind the timing belt cover. You have to remove the timing belt cover to gain access to it.:annoyed:

i did some homework and it seems there's another sensor on the back of the engine on the cab side, supposedly this is the sensor that is wired to the temp gauge. any confirmation on this??

That was the one I was thinking of, got confused by @1schoir 's answer

Difficult to reach with coolant hoses in the way, but it's possible, I've done it.

    Found it I think .
Attached the pic. Doesn’t seem to be any sort of wire nearby that would fit in there. Anyone know where I should look? The wiring harness hole on the ride side of the engine compartment doesn’t seem like there’s anything there. There’s also a connector there that’s not being used. Anyone know what that is for?

    Is your engine a 3.4L V6 or a 2.7 4cyl?

ok im guessing that unused connector connects to the sensor. but theres a wire i need that connects the two. napa is nearby but the part they have looks like one side needs to be soldered and shrink wrapped. doesnt seem right.

If I remember correctly, mine was a little spade terminal and the connector was a small rectangular connector that just slid on. Neither of those in your pic look like mine, but I think that's the right spot.

Before you start just jamming things together, I'd try to be very sure that connector is supposed to go to that sensor. You have a small problem now, don't make it a better problem by shorting something in the ECU out.

Is there some back story here? Like a rebuilt motor was installed?

i got the truck real cheap so im not sure what was done to it beforehand, very little information was disclosed so i am discovering new things about it every day. there is alot to be done. the ignition was replaced for sure, the inside of the engine compartment is a different color than the color inside the gascap. the vin on title matches the one in the cab, so im thinking just the bed was swapped. but not for sure. it did throw a code on the scanner my friend had, so im thinking the MIL is also not operational. definitely would like to know if this thing is running hot or overheating at all so i figure ill tackle the list slowly and figure out some of the electrical things malfunctioning..needs a new horn before i can pass safety. quite a project truck. but it seems to be running strong and 4wd is working. the light on the cluster for the 4wd also doesnt light up too though..thinking theres some kinda mess behind the cluster
