Please tell me where I prognosticated the new Toyota Turbocharged I4 engine would be the world's most reliable engine? All I'm trying to say is all of this noise you and others are making about how crappy blown engines are is horribly premature; give it a rest already.

Long story short, I have no worries about the reliability of the new engine, you do; fair enough, time will tell.

You’re the one arguing that a turbocharged engine is as reliable as a naturally aspirated one. If you’re going to argue then back it up with facts. I’m pretty sure most people agree that adding forced induction to an engine and the shitload of extra parts required to do so makes an engine more likely to break.

I have never once argued that point, apparently your reading comprehension is not very good. My basic thesis is, "Turbocharged engines can be engineered and built to be as reliable as normally aspirated engines."

In general Turbo engines are put through more stress than a non turbo engine plus it does add more complexity.

The thing that scares me is turbo replacement. If they make it a nightmare like the tundra you could be looking at a huge repair cost at some point. I've owned a few factory turbo cars over the years, and all needed a turbo between 100-150k. Even big trucks will go through a few turbo replacements before the motor needs a rebuild. The turbo itself lives a hard life.

To which I say, you are wrong, for all the reasons already mentioned.

Whether we like it or not, the 2.4T looks to be coming to a Tacoma truck dealer near by.

I suspect that it maybe made a reliable vehicle, or will be made to be so shortly after all the bugs, if any are all sorted out, so that is not an issue.
The issue is, after all warranties have expired, all this very expensive components and labor to maintain\repair it, will make it a throw away item, much like a TV is today.

With the exception that a new replacement tv can be had for $250 which is good for another 8-10 years, but a truck not so much.
So why would someone even want to own one. If the automakers think we can just rent or lease, there are other choices.

Looks like my ’16 is going to be around for a while.

“Cuba is one of the few countries in the world where most private automobiles are older than their owners.”

And other than the throw away feature of these new engine, it’s a beautiful thing!

lol! I used to love turbos
We used to add turbos on to N/A engines in our late teens to go drag racing at the track. Back in the good old days, a turbo kit would run $600-800, everything was affordable and life was good, until it got expensive and sponsors dried out.

I’m no stranger to turbo diesels either, I have no problem or issues when the money is there for the repairs. But most consumers are going to be livid when they discover they have bought a very expensive throw away vehicle.

Go to autotrader and do a search. There are hundreds of F150’s listed for sale with the 3.5tt and over 200,000 miles on them. If Ford can do it, I’m confident that Toyota can.

Except the ford actually has balls and it’s a supercar engine … and the Toyota one gets the highlander 0-60 in 9 seconds and the same mpg as prior.

    Can’t wait for progress

I doubt the Tacoma is going to have highlander specs

And I suspect the TOYOTA Tacoma turbo is going to join all those thousands of F-150’s for sale on autotrader.com too.
All worthless, and desperate to sell them for good reason. Can we say it, throw away!

For those of you guys worried about the reliability of the 2.4 turbo (myself included), watch this video. If you're curious specifically about the new turbo part, skip to about the 8:30 mark.

“Toyota shared that the new turbo engine should get 25 mpg combined, which is the same as the outgoing model” from the highlander

And the official 0-60 is slower than outgoing model … yay

I trust Scotty Kilmer more than the car nut guy, Scotty was fixing cars while he (the nut) was still in diapers, and Scotty says not to turbos

You're welcome to have your own opinion. However, I trust car care nut guy more. Why? Because I feel like a lot of scotty's videos are click baits and he's just trying to get views to make more money and all the power to him.

Scotty is not the only one saying the same thing. And where will all the qualified techs come from when the industry is hard pressed to make good oil changes?

What’s funny is if an aftermarket company came out with a turbo kit for the 3rd gen Tacoma at a reasonable price many people would buy it and install it saying how great it is.
