If they make the '24 Taco turbo easy to change and labor friendly where I can change the turbo without removing the cab or engine, then we might be off the hook. We'll have to see.

I love turbos too, on a sports car. Not on a truck though.

I’m sure this will affect resale value too. Who wants to buy a well used turbo truck with no maintenance record with a ticking time bomb turbo.

Doesn’t the current Tacoma have mini van specs? :D

In the video it states you can remove the turbocharger without having to remove the engine.

Meanwhile the Frontier can beat those numbers with a V6.

But unfortunately, the turbo on the video is not a taco. We have to wait and see if the knuckleheads engineers will do the right thing on the truck

A properly maintained turbo will last as long as most non commercial engines 150-250k miles. So why does it matter at 250k miles you’ll have bigger issues than turbo itself

Because the turbo is the nail on the coffin to a slew of issues already piling up

Without removing the engine? Those engineers should get a medal for that. You probably just have to take apart 80% of the engine bay.

You need to change “will” to “might”. Plenty of turbos fail well below 150K.

Remember in a 4 cyl truck application, that turbo is going to be worked hard. It's a lot of weight for a 4 cyl to push. It's going to need a good amount of boost to make enough power. Turbo technology has gotten pretty damn good but I really don't see them regularly lasting 200k. Thats a long time for something to spin at 100,000 rpm+

And let's not forget about what happens if a turbo really let's go and sends metal shaving into the intake and blows up the motor.

In a longitudinal layout with a 4-cylinder in an engine bay as large as the Tacoma's, I would seriously doubt there will be much in the way of getting the turbo out (from the chassis, who knows what else on the engine itself will stand between you and the turbo).

I'm not sure how extensive it is, I'm sure there is some work involved. The hammer asked if you had to remove the engine and the answer is no.

While replacing a turbo is expensive it’s not necessarily a deal breaker these days. I spent a similar price to replace my transmission seal which failed at 160k. other owners have spent far more on timing cover leaks. I love the 3.5 but it’s gutless and you need to work it hard when loaded down or towing. I can’t see it lasting over 350k-400k miles. I’m a high Mileage driver and it’s taken me 7 years to put over 170k on my 16. Realistically how many taco owners will see over 300k? I think it’s a small number. By the time you get to 300k miles you will spend thousands replacing ball joints, UCAs, shocks, leaf springs, tie rods, maybe a steering rack, u joints, maybe a wheel bearing or two. With the 2.4t we are getting just what the taco needs. A small efficient engine that makes great low end torque. Add a hybrid max setup and it will be a better performing motor than the Tacoma has ever had. Not to mention engines designed around turbos are actually stronger than comparable NA engines. There are plenty of examples of turbo charged Lexus engines rolling over 200k with no turbo issues.

He said in the video there is the possibility you may have to pull the drive shaft, around the 9 minute mark.

That’s not a longitudinal arrangement in a body-on-frame truck, so things are a little more cramped.
