Yeah that counts. Just don't know the platform all that well, when I was a kid/teen my best friends dad had one. I know the 4.0 is trusted. Just sort of casually been looking at them, always liked the body style. Prices for clean/unmodified ones are lower than some other stuff. Wasn't sure if anyone had any insights living with one or working on em, major issues, easier/harder to work on etc. Just curious really. I know the J word brings baggage haha

Donkey. I didn’t see the chains pop. Just the brake. But the brake shoulda locked up and the chains should stopped it from ripping gate off. If was wondering if the ram was a friends rig and he was towing for the guys w the trucks.

They're not the worst, I'd get a 90s-00s one not one of the weird 80s ones though. The trans is just a rebadged A340 or R150, the 4.0 is good provided it's before 2002 cause some of those had cracking heads. They're unibody, so uh, do with that what you will, the axles are trash but if you're dailying it they're great. The radiators are too small for the iron 4.0 so be prepared to put an expensive thick all aluminum one in. They're about as reliable as a Jeep could ever be, and if you get one with an NP242 then you get 2wd, 4wd, and AWD with low range even.

Thanks, that was thorough! Seems like more potential headache than it might be worth. I've heard those and TJs are decent, I just think the level of "reliable" is different than what I'm used to. Unibody would be a first for me too, not really sure what that rigidity would be like. Maybe that's a toss-up. I've just been interested in smaller/short wheelbase stuff so been looking around, but it's not a great market. I'm trying to attempt some open-mindedness a little and look at some stuff I wouldn't normally look at, I don't mind getting a little weird. Most roads keep leading back to Toy/Lexus it seems. Cruiser market has gone full dumb though. I appreciate the info. I might not full on count them out but shit, though I've accepted I might get something older again, also don't want a big headache.

Have you considered single can Tacomas? I really loved my old one, at least I did til I found a hole in the frame.

Oh I love em, I just don't want another 1st gen, want to mix it up. (I'm not getting rid of mine) They're still my favorite 1st gen body, aesthetically.

My favorite is the FZJ73. Most of them are in Colombia though from what I've seen.

I've heard they can have some electrical issues too. Overall I wouldn't think they're too much trouble to keep on the road though. Parts are everywhere, they made millions of them. A lot of people add frame strengthening plates and I don't think it's that hard to swap to Dana 44s.

They pop up here, there's a few nice ones on eBay right now, just...import headaches as far as parts sourcing etc. Not sure I'm keen on that, but they're great.
