Exactly, makes no sense to me as to why he didn't just put them on to begin with....

I guess I am wondering why they did not tell you that they did not have shims and let you make the decision of whether you wanted to purchase some or go with the old ones. They made that decision, not you, so realistically they should be responsible to fix it correctly. Any good shop will admit their mistake and fix it free of charge.
Thank being said, the shop did a hack job and I would never take it back there to be fixed. As others have said, go to another shop to get the work done. If you really wanted to, you could take the first shop to small claims court. Have the shop that does the re-work document everything for you if you decide to go this route.

They should have stopped and told you before installing everything back together. Doesn't seem like a good shop releasing a unfinished job especially gears. Even when you bring them parts they should've stopped and talked to you before proceeding with the install. Get some more info as stated above, try and get your money back.

    just wow!
Didn't have the right parts, so made due without contacting you? That's ridiculous. You can't just cobble shit back together, without prior approval and tell the customer they have to pay again to have it done right.
Is this shop known for doing gears?

    From their website:

"offers complete gear and differential work. Our Techs have an extensive background in working with all makes and models of differential, both stock and aftermarket for repairs and customizations. "

I’d go elsewhere based on this OP experience with this shop. They don’t inspire any confidence and their ethics leaves a lot to be desired.

Only the worst and more loss of money and time can be expected from these clowns, not worth the headaches

The tech “showed his hand” when he admitted it needed another shim or 2, but then HE made the decision to just send it anyway. That was your decision to make, not his. If you would have told him to reuse your old shims, then this would be on you. But he went ahead and made that call, and now you have a botched gear install (that could very well fail prematurely because the setup was not done right). If it were me, I would go in there and tell them exactly this. If they do not bend at all, I would probably tell them that your next step is to get your state’s bureau of automotive repair involved and your credit card company (if you paid with a card).

stock shim for these trucks is typically 0.076 to 0.077 which is shallow. I’m seeing 0.080 0.083 for most nitro and Yukon gears. My suggestion is to stop driving the truck and have the gears professionally set up. I can do it if you send me the loose diff. The whine is def from the shallow pattern, but could also be from poor pinion or carrier preload. When the next person goes to make an adjustment, they may find that the bearings are damaged, so be prepared for that. You will need at the bare minimum is a new pinion seal and a new crush sleeve or a solid pinion spacer.

FYI, you can see the specs I write down on the build. If you didn’t get a sheet similar, I’d ask where it went.

If I’m looking at the same business online, they seem pretty sassy with negative reviewers which is never a good sign. But they also have an overall good rating. None of the reviews I skimmed talked about having gear work done though.

They obviously half-assed it, and won't own up to it. Find another shop. Go the CC route or court to get your $ back. Document it.

So sorry to hear this happened. I have set up a few gear sets on Land Rovers and would never compromise new gears without making sure it was within exact spec. I would definitely not drive it and get it into a different shop. Might be salvageable.

Hopefully OP sees these, this dude looks (and measurements and pics to prove) he knows what he's talking about. I'd take his advice and maybe PM him to come up with a plan. It sounds like you were maybe flat ripped the F off.

This here. What a shitty shop. They’re should have never completed install without getting the pinion depth set correctly. If you put on a credit card, contest the fee based on incorrectly installed part and then see what they say. Good luck but again, That was a piss poor install by the shop.

Also Op. if you pay another shop to fix it. Make sure they document the incorrect install in writing and with pictures.
