That may sound nice and all, but I feel like the reason people buy Toyota is for simplicity and reliability. Nothing beats a naturally aspirated direct and port injected engine in terms of reliability. Adding turbos and hybrid systems will be a nightmare in terms of cost to repair

That would be nice. I hope the space that is saved with the small motor is added to the cab and not just empty space under the hood.

Toyota changed back from 5 bolts (with 14 mm bolts) to a 6x139.7 (same as the Tacoma) with the latest generation Tundra, so it is seems highly unlikely they would come up with a "new" pattern for the new Tacoma. We don't get 2WD Tacomas in the Great White North, so all our wheels are compatible for many years' models.

Exactly! If I wanted to waste time and money fixing things I would have bought a Canyon and saved some upfront cost.

Every Tacoma generation has become more complex than the last. The 3rd gen is not a simple vehicle like the Toyota trucks of the 90s or 80s. Yet they still are reliable and can be driven for a very long time. 1st gen guys bitched about the 2nd gen. 2nd gen guys lamented that the new 3.5 was the end of Toyota reliability. And here we are with the third gen guys doing the same thing. The circle of life. Saying they will be inherently unreliable or more expensive is speculation at this point. I can see more problems potentially after 250k miles but that is a lot of miles. A lot of Toyota owners brag about longevity but trade in their trucks every couple of years or never use them as trucks. I think I’ve seen less than 10 members on here with over 250k on their third gens.

It has to do with higher engine operating temperatures and higher internal pressure contributing to a lack of longevity. Turbos typically need to be rebuilt after "X" number of miles and that is never cheap.

I hope these come with bigger wheels/tires and brakes. Minimum 33 inch tires is not too much to ask.

I've had several Euro turbos, and twin turbos (Sedans and wagons), I also had turbo diesel AWD SUVs (outside of the USA). I always start getting nervous when approaching 100k miles. (I cringe at my wife's million micro-trips - no warm-up before arrival. Guns it uphill just before engine shut-off...

It is a factor of moving parts. More are more likely to fail. It is just the odds. Turbos -have been- traditionally expensive to replace. No need to replace a turbo if you do not have one... They are a fast-spinning, high-precision component. When they go, they go... and whether a little or a lot; they COST. - Lots of labor and down time.

Twin Turbos make me twice as nervous. They are wonderful, reduce lag and crank out the Horses... But because 2x they are double the (expensive) risk.

I am on my last ICE vehicle at the moment. I enjoy driving the Tacoma (did I say it was an MT??).
I am beyond my "speed racer" days. I enjoy driving a slow vehicle slow - and slow off road in 4x4!
(For driving a slow and fun vehicle fast on the pavement - I have my (very) old mini cooper - as in the original from the 1960s).

Going forward, I want fewer moving parts... not more. My next 4x4 will be Electric - and I can't wait. Our other car is already electric. (No way I'd go back! - despite the fact I dad to surrender a stick and two pedals - (due to regen braking!))

    So we are getting there...

I'll risk the electric e-brake, and touch screen wipers (why?! WHY!!!) in an electric vehicle. No way an ICE vehicle.

Why not just buy whatever tires you want? The manufacturer is not going to please everyone with their OEM tire choice nor do they care to.

Right now, I would say the 3rd gen TOYOTA Tacoma is the MVP of all the trucks out there.
The Ford ranger used to be a really good truck, it was a Tacoma nemesis until they put a turbo on it.

Will TOYOTA follow the same path by fixing what ain’t broke on the Taco?

TOYOTA has not officially announced anything yet, they don’t have to do this and follow Ford down a rabbit hole. I feel for the current Ford owners and hope the Taco owners do not suffer the same fate/

Here is a summary from the of the article link below:

“The Ford Ranger… It is known as the best-selling compact truck in the United States from the years 1987 to 2004. In 2012”

“The Ford Ranger is back in the US market and this time, it is equipped with a 2.3L turbocharged inline-4 and a 10-speed automatic.

“The Ford Ranger turbo is still relatively new and we do hope that it will be more reliable compared to the older Rangers and its users won’t be having more Ford Ranger turbo problems in the future. “

    A few.
With the info stating that the current 3.5 V6 will be getting carried over as one of the engine choices on the 4th gen tacoma, i have to wonder why Toyota didnt do the same with the Tundra? Could have kept the 5.7 V8 for at least the first couple years as the base engine and the twin turbo V6 Hybrid as the upgrade. Adding the 10 speed auto to the 5.7 and using higher gears in the rearend should of gotten the mpgs up close to what they are with the V6 twin turbo.
