Console Shift Position Indicator Too Bright

I had enough of being distracted at night by the super bright D (drive) gear indicator in the console so I removed the console then I unplugged and unscrewed the indicator and shifter boot assembly. After bringing the assembly into the house I set about opening the indicator.
I accessed the solid state chip board and located the LEDs. Then I put the smallest drop of my wife's dark blue nail polish on the LED behind the D reducing the brightness to a dim glow.
I'm super happy with the results and I can now drive at night without perpetually having to cover the indicator with my hand.

 

The technically correct way would have been to desolder the resistor with a hot air gun and put a resistor of a higher value in.

 

I just put electrical tape over the D.

shows me on the dash what gear/direction I’m in. Took about 3 seconds, looks great, and was essentially free.

 

Hmm, I never noticed. I do put black Sharpie on some blue lights like the fan in the bedroom, it has three that light the whole damn room.

 

I did that after the first time driving my truck at night, in March 2017. Damn D reflection in the windows was highly distracting.

I would bet that you could put those on the bottom of the console piece and darken it to your content. With the selector position shown in the center display, the console is very secondary.

I've never had an issue with mine, but that's just me.

 

I tackled this mod a couple weeks ago. Came out awesome. Used nail polish and covers the leds as well with a dab of nail polish and tiny tube 3m electrical tape pieces.

I sit high in the seat and that may be why is would see the reflection in the windows.

 

Tint it.

I just popped the console up and unplugged the light. I’ve got pretty bad night blindness anymore.
