After almost 100 pages I think I am in a wrong forum - I am looking for a small truck to drive daily, on the weekend to go to Home Depot and Costco, to be reliable, small to drive comfortable in the city, low maintanace, 22-24 MPG, access cab, and a good resale value. What I am reading here we are looking for a Corvette and Raptor competitor together - we want at least 350 HP, and 350 torque, turbo (why not two), plug-in-hybrid, 3-6 inches additional space in the back, 35s atleast, etc. Let's face it - IT'S TACOMA - There are plenty of other options on the market

I use mine as a truck and my car for daily transportation and therefore will never see 250k+ miles. Most pickups now a days are just overpriced people haulers.

Clearly you do not understand the engine temperatures in a turbocharged engine are no higher than a normally aspirated engine. The internal pressure will do nothing to shorten longevity if properly accounted for by the designers. As for turbos needing to be rebuilt, my wife and I have had three turbocharged cars over the years, two of them went to 150,000+ miles, one went to 225,000+ miles, and none of them ever had a lick of problems with the turbochargers. I submit if you properly maintain a vehicle with a turbocharged engine, the turbocharger, and the rest of the engine for that matter, will easily last as long as the rest of the vehicle.

If my truck were to get totaled and I needed to buy a new truck today I would get a Frontier. It has a better engine and drive train than the current Tacoma and gets better gas mileage. The Tacoma fan boys don’t want to believe it but it’s the truth. We’ll have to wait and see what the 4th gen brings for drive train options.

Then why do other people have so many problems with their turbos? This wouldn’t even be a discussion if it wasn’t well known that turbos can and do fail.

Anecdotal evidence is not evidence, just like this: back when I had two consecutive Chrysler turbocharged cars in the 1980s and early 1990s, the mileage when I disposed of the cars were 150,000+ and 225,000+, the turbos were perfectly operational. That said, I had lots of acquaintances with turbo cars which did require replacement turbochargers. Why? They maintained their cars like crap; anecdotal evidence, proves nothing. In the end, the only proof of the new Toyota engine's longevity will be when it gets on the road, and nothing either you or I say will change that, so stop your bitching and wait for the real thing.

Now, if you think the fact my 1985 Daytona went so far on the factory turbo because it wasn't a "modern engine", then I have to tell you you're not thinking straight, turbocharger technology has vastly improved over the last 40 years, like it or don't.

with the turbo's on the new tundra, shouldn't toyota have done long-term durability testing? you'd think they would share that assuming it were favorable........

Sorry. Better transmission for the non Manual Bros. It’s still a better engine.

Just because you got lucky with a few turbo cars doesn’t mean the other millions of cars produced haven’t had problems.
You’re also talking about turbo engines in tiny little cars, not a heavy truck used for towing and hauling.

Or the 2AZ burning oil and pulling the head bolt threads out from the block. Yep Toyota does fuck up basic NA 4-cylinders on the odd occasion.
"Better" in what way? Torque and shift logic? That's always been the case even with the VQ40DE in the 2nd gen.

Curious, if Toyota or other companies recommend servicing their turbo after x-miles ?

Better by having more horsepower and and a 9 speed transmission delivering better mpg.

With a turbo, as long as you use a high quality synthetic oil (Mobil 1, IMHO) and change it at the recommend intervals (and NO cheating, ever), it should be fine.

Not that I have noticed. I don’t think there is much to service other than keeping the oil clean. With the Forester XT we had it was recommended to change the oil more frequently than what was listed in the manual. There is a little screen in the turbo oil feed that can get clogged up with sludge from dirty oil and cause a turbo failure. On that car there is a second coolant tank near the inter cooler. It cracked and had to be replaced. The car was out of service for about a week waiting for the part. All of these extra parts and systems that can fail are why I say that a turbo engine isn’t as reliable. It’s simple more items to fail.

Why don’t you just try typing turbo failures into google.

Dude, we all know you have your panties in a twist over turbocharged engines, but honestly, your non-stop rhetoric is really tiring. Why don't you just shut the hell up and wait and see what really happens? Yeah, I know, a futile hope, you're going to keep railing against turbocharged engines, even if the new Toyota proves to be rock solid.
