1st Gen Lunchtable Thread - General Discussion

I have a Marlin clutch in my truck and I struggle to drive most manual vehicles I jump in for the first few mins because it’s engagement is so odd. I’ve driven 3 Toyotas with the Marlin replacement. All were like that.

 

All my toyotas have always had 90% of the engagement at the very top, which is actually how I prefer it, and my Marlin clutch was light feeling in the foot. But I adjusted the pedal a few times to get it there. Marlin stopped selling clutches and I'm pissed cause I wanted another.

 

It doesn’t help that my clutch master cylinder is from Autozone (previous owner installed) I’m sure. Converted to the linear brake pedal spring too because all the pivot points with the progressive spring had worn through the metal on the pedal bracket.

One day I’ll splurge on a new bracket/bushings and Aisin master cylinder.

 

Looks with Marlin having given up on trying to stock half their shit I'm just going to have to assemble a clutch myself or have Clutch Specialties in Georgia build me one. Thinking I can get away with a factory diaphragm and put an ACT disc in there...

I’m still hearing the TOB chirping noise when driving with the clutch out. When I search I just see threads on the 2nd gen.

Anyone know if there’s a fix for this shirt if replacing the clutch and TOB?

 

Nope, you replace it and hope it doesn't come right back. Mine only rarely does it but if I send it through water it goes hard for a few days. If you replace it, get a quality Japanese bearing.

 

I gathered from the threads I looked at that there’s not much risk to driving it like this, apart from it being annoying.

 

Yeah they just make a lot of noise, its not bad until it makes noise when it is pressed, then it has a chance of wearing the fingers on the clutch diaphragm

 

Just installed a 4xinnovations rear swing out on my 01 double cab and now I have some rear end sag. I bought the complete OME kit form wheelers in 2019 which came with OME CS046RA and OME CS046RB leafs. What is the best way to correct this sag while maintaining good suspension dynamics? I have a camper shell too and would like to add a rack on top of it.

 

To summarize; it's easier keeping a Tacoma on the ground than a 4Runner.

So I'd say Tacoma.

If you owned both, you wouldn't notice the difference though.

 

Interesting, maybe that’s cause of the longer wheelbase?

I would’ve thought the 4Runner cause if the coil springs in the back but idk.

 

Hmm, read some reviews, bought the upgraded Exedy clutch. I've had decent Exedys in the past, never used an upgraded spec one though.

 

In my experience the 4Runner feels really unstable in the rear but it holds the ground well enough, just never liked the rear suspension geometry on them at all, feels tippy, like it pivots in place.

 

The coils fall out with enough shock length.

But then your driveshaft hits your gas tank.

And then you realize your shocks are too short anyway.

Then when you relocate, you find out your rear upper control arms bind because of their stupidly short length and geometry.

After handling a rear shock relocation, control arm relocation (or custom link) and F150 fuel tank, you end up switching to a leaf pack anyway.

The coil rear just gives you a softer ride overall.

 

Yeah I would run the same lines as my Tacoma friends, and get it done every time.

Difference was my 4R would often go 3 wheel whereas their Taco would remain planted; definitely way more tippy but it taught me a lot. Even having more travel than them barely helped.

 

I can definitely see why you went to the 80 series. Looking at the market now I can't even find one for under 15k. One nice one came up for 10k recently in Tulsa but it was gone within a day.

 

@Speedytech7 I may have asked this before but I'm curious how you'd compare the FZJ80 and Tacoma in the snow? My 80 series was a beast in snowy/icy conditions, I assume cause of the weight distribution and viscous coupler/AWD.

 

Even 4Runners are up there in price for the most part.

@eon_blue and I both looked throughout our areas only for it to be over half hour away from my own place.

I love my 80 series, and even though I miss having a clean 4R, I wouldn't buy one. Would rather have a truck while keeping 80 series in my stable.

 

Do you have an AAL? That and/or airbags might be necessary, but I'm not the authority on this.

 

That kinda comes down to tires for me. My 80 does really well in the snow but I have three peak rated ATs on it and the AWD is nice. The taco when it had ATs did pretty good in the snow too in 4WD but with the MTs it's just dangerous.
