Not familiar with Foresters but what did the coolant tank have to do with the turbo? Don't they use an air to air intercooler?

Apparently its all about the emissions. EPA really cracking down. Rich people are still fine with their private jets, though. No problem.

I started it? Who has been railing against turbo engine for many-many pages now?

Precisely. So now we're going to have a hunting transmission, driveline vibrations, needle bearings going out, saggy rear (coils now most likely), buggy transfer case actuators, differentials that like to suck in water, and finally oil burning/starvation/wear issues and most likely some weird waste gate stuff too.

    Did I miss anything?

Lets see how this comment ages in 2025....

I think it has to do with coolant for the turbo.

All I said was a turbo engine is less reliable and you went on a never ending fight trying to get the last word in. Let in go.

I don’t get people who anecdotally claim infallible turbo performance, when everything else I see and hear point to the contrary.

But yes, even the worst design in engineering can give a one off once in a while, but the majority are not usually that lucky. And I don’t believe in luck either. Luck is made when opportunity and skill meet.

    Case in point

Ford Ranger Turbo Problems: Everything You Need to Know!

"There have been some Ford Ranger turbo problems that were reported from its users. Keep in mind that the new Ford Ranger turbo engine is still pretty new and there might be some other Ford Ranger turbo problems that might start when the vehicle starts to hit a certain mileage. But here are some of the problems reported by its users."

Because when you go bigger tire size, it messes with the mileage, etc. etc. some people just want everything covered by warranty and have the whole package from the time they drive it off the parking lot. Besides, putting together installs and waiting for parts is a pain. I just want it one and done. Trail hunter is a start so hopefully it’s minimal adding from there for people that want that style of trucks.

My wife had a 2004 Forester XT that we bought with 145k miles (unknown maintenance history) and at ~150k the turbo went south, I found a core/impeller, replaced it myself for around $150.

I still don’t understand how an engine getting the same mpg results in better emissions.
The resulting out put of emissions should be the same as the input of fuel all things being equal. I’m assuming there is some fuckery during some sort of standardized emissions tests that doesn’t result in any real world benefit… ala Dieselgate with vw.
Doesn’t pass the sniff test-pun intended

The actual bad stuff (not C02) that comes from the combustion process can be affected by a lot of factors, while MPG remains the same. The relationship between cylinder pressures and NOx is a big one.

That can’t be possible. Someone here says they never fail. :D
Ours was a 2011. That was one of the funnest SUVs we’ve owned. So fast. We traded it in around 80k before anymore problems.

Yeah, supposed to be a cleaner/more complete burn of the fuel, even if it's the same amount, so it has less emissions.

I’d love to see how, if it’s a more “complete burn” it should be more efficient?! Which it isn’t.

Love to see this published and actually tested. Not like Toyota didn’t try to reduce them back when the 3.5 was developed.
I don’t see how a turbo engine is cleaner burning.

clearly there is the cat effectiveness question … which is the wild card

The Super Bowl is in ~3 weeks. Maybe we'll know something then.
