I have to go through LASD since I don't actually live in any municipality. At the moment I'm holding off because the new law that got passed allows the board of supervisors to remove the elected sheriff for whatever reason they can think of/fabricate/pretend is important. With the makeup of the board of supervisors, it's not a stretch to think they might decide that compliance with Federal Law and the U.S. Constitution could constitute "good cause", and they'd be applauded by the bulk of the voters who just enacted that law directly if they did.

I'm sure the Board would prefer the LASD follow the lead of the SFSD and pretend to "not have any way to process applications" or take such a stringent interpretation of the "good moral character" requirement that it becomes the new pretense to refuse every application.

Either way, I spend so much time in places where private company policies prohibit weapons (except law enforcement) that it's not really worth the trouble so far. I have seen something about a multi-state permit that includes CA (they used to not do any version of reciprocity, and the states that don't require a permit make 50-state acceptance impossible to structure), which I might check out and might cover almost the whole country if combined with a Utah non-resident permit.

Since the Supreme Court ruling all counties in California are issuing ccw permits including LA county. You no longer have to write a letter explaining why you want or need to carry. You have to apply through the sheriffs department of the county you reside in. The requirements are up to each sheriff and vary for each county. In all counties though you make application, a background check is done and you are interviewed in person by sheriffs personnel. Then you have to take either an 8 hour or 16 hour course depending on the county. Then you have to qualify on the range with the gun you are going to carry. You can qualify with up to 3 guns. You can only carry guns you have actually qualified with. Finally you go for a final interview and receive your ccw. You have to renew it every 2 years and take a 4 hour class and requalify on the range. Be sure to get “carry” insurance. If you ever have to use it, no matter the circumstances , no matter how just you are you will be sued and the insane California DA’s may try to prosecute you.

If you have any interest, it's worth just getting your app in. It'll likely be 9-12mon before they even contact you. There's a huge backlog. I don't see the board of supervisors kicking Luna out simply for allowing the issuance per current law. They aren't handing them out like candy and as long as he doesn't fall victim to a situation with bad optics like his predecessor (many of his supporters were quickly issued permits) I doubt anything will happen. They're already issuing permits under Luna and it doesn't seem like he's doing anything to slow it down.

Of course, anything could happen. But I think it's extremely unlikely they'll kick Luna out for this unless he further relaxes issuing standards (which is unlikely to happen). Especially because if they kick Luna out it just makes it possibly someone they view as worse could be put in place.

I like my original Sig P365. Always goes bang, conceals great with my Milt Sparks Summer Special. There are so many great guns available. I suggest going to a range and rent / try as many as you can. Good luck.

Thanks again everyone for the great information and suggestions. Unfortunately a lot of the suggested guns are not available in California. New guns purchased must be California compliant or they can’t be sold new in California. A lot of manufacturers are not applying for California approval on their new guns as it is a time consuming and expensive process. Old guns that were bought prior to the California gun compliance law can be bought, sold, traded but you cannot buy one new if not California compliant. It really limits the new guns available for purchase.

Sherriff's donors and the politically well connected were always given more leeway in terms of what constituted "legitimate need". Not to mention those working private security for the most publicly outspoken advocates for "repeal 2A" in the area.

Pretty sure the county supervisers were more pissed at Villanueva for refusing to enforce a number of the more draconian Covid shutdown and vax mandate policies, as well as some of the things that were done regarding the "unhoused neighbors" in certain parts of town. Clearing out Venice Beach shortly after Garcetti announced his plan to erect the core of a permanent slum there particularly stuck in the craw of some of my more "progressive" believing friends.

The sequence/process is the way it's supposed to be working under the law, but the counties which had, in the past, taken the most agressive stands on the "may issue" and "good reason" aspects of the law are in some cases still delaying the process. SF County in particular, hasn't moved on processing over 100 applications submitted since the USSC ruling overturned all state/local "may issue" clauses (prior to the ruling they typically recieved, and summarily refused 3-4 applications in any given year), and I can guarantee that the powers that be in L.A. County (particularly the Board of Supervisors) aren't big fans of the idea of any document which limits the authority of the state except for restricting a very narrow subset of medical treatments available to half the population and are working tirelessly to find some grounds to get the 9th circuit to try to stay the implementation of the higher court's rulings.

I have no real doubt that the Sheriffs in San Bernardino, Kern, Orange, Ventura, Riverside, San Diego, Imperial, and SLO counties (maybe even Santa Barbara County as well) are processing applications with reasonable levels of efficiency and even expedience (many of them were known to actually allow "self defense" as an acceptable reason for wanting a permit under the previous law). With the new Sheriff in L.A. County, elected by the authoritarian leftists who elect the Supervisors and who were so angered by the last Sheriff's deference the the U.S. Constitution over the dictates of that board in combination with the newly enacted law allowing that Board to remove said Sheriff at any time for nearly any reason they choose to concoct, there are a number of strong disincentives for the new Sheriff to be rigid about his department operating tightly within the boundaries of certain laws that happen to be disfavored by a large portion of the local electorate.

Franklin armory just did a back door deal with Sig and got their P320 model approved on CA roster. I’ve got one on the way. It’s a single shot but like everyone does anyway they replace it with a Wilson Combat grip module. My CCW application is currently pending with LAPD. I was surprised to get a call from a detective who verified I was on the interview wait list.

^ Agree 100%, even if you have to drive an hour or more, worth it (Wish I followed this advise in the past).

Springfield Armory; XDS is super easy to carry (Did so for ~ 7 years); only traded it because I wanted something new/larger with a manual safety. (Capacity is relatively low and trigger pull is not great, grip sensitive = acceptable center mass performance out to ~10 meters or so. BUT, for shoot and scoot and EASY to EDC all day, every day (And affordable) It is ideal

I don't know the correct name; but 1911 with 4.2" barrel and 7 rnd (.45acp) mag is very easy to shoot well and conceal (Negatives being low capacity and weight)

FWIW: My EDC is now a SIG M18 with a Wilson Combat grip module. Works great for 3 season EDC (Come summer I'll likely get a 365(MS)
