Or slice through the ring gear with a zip disc, and partway through the flywheel from each side. Then finish breaking the cast flywheel with a ball pein hammer. Flywheels are pretty cheap.

Something about their story / diagnosis really smells like fish to me though.

 

That works too ! Myself I am Cheap I would reuse the fly wheel.

 

I asked the mechanic about exactly what you're suggesting. Ruin the flywheel if necessary to save the crank. He told me he didn't have a means to cut the flywheel off and that it was out of the scope of a dealership's service department to do. I guess dealerships would rather throw the engine away (or fix it themselves and resell it later) and charge a huge amount to drop in a replacement than do something that's not in a flat rate manual...

Typical replace parts never really fix anything if you really think.

Translation: "We can make a lot more money doing a different repair job for the time we would have to spend cutting off the flywheel."

 

Flywheels typically fall off once the bolts are removed .
My guess would be that the last time the clutch was done , someone was in a rush re- installing the flywheel after machining and jammed the flywheel on with an impact gun creating a lip .
Grab a new rear main oil seal .
Get the torch out and heat the center of the flywheel. It will come off

I would suggest that the vehicle have the removed parts secured in the bed, and have it towed to a reputable independent shop that has transmission experience.

At the very least, you'll have a second opinion.

At the very worst, they'll confirm something very unusual and too expensive to fix in a practical way.

At the very best they'll be creative, solve the problem and properly reassemble the truck.

And whichever path is the right one to follow, it will be at a much lower cost than a dealership that's given up.

If she doesn't have some type of towing insurance, join AAA for a one year fee and have it towed by them. It will cost less than a private tow OOP.

 

This all makes perfect sense...thank you! Do you think the original noises could have originated from the flywheel being improperly installed or in all likelihood would they have been from somewhere else in the clutch area? That's probably tough to answer without either of us hearing it. Thanks again...
