Big wood comes in all the time. I normally don't run anything larger than a 28 " bar on the big saws; sometimes a 32.

The dark spots in the log on the left are metal, many times bullets or lag bolts. These trees came from farmland.

I still use the X27 occasionally

How are you keeping the pipe from rattling out of the loader arm, and how long is the chain?

I’m probably gonna make a metal strap across each end and put a wing nut on it, haven’t really thought about it that much, yet. That chain is 3/8” X 16’.

In one version I've seen of this, the guy drilled a small hole in the edge of the flange on the loader arm and inserted a pin to prevent unplanned removal of the pipe.

love the saw topic. my dads weapons of choice were stihl 044 for small, and 064 &066 for large. he handbuilt some of the fastest pro class competition saws ever. pipes, porting, narrowed hand built chains. pictured is his landing one that made (3) 33' and (1) 16' length. im inheretting a nice large husky from him. sadly because he passed 2 weeks ago. real hero of mine. Sorry for your loss. I met a few long time loggers up in No. Idaho in 2015. They worked mostly in No. Cal & BC.
One guy said he ran an 076. Not too familiar with the old Stihl's so I went to acres saw listing for a look see. I believe many old Stihl's are still manufactured in Brazil and can be purchased from overseas dealers.

he mainly worked there. i grew up in Elk Wa. and dad was often in idaho hills to work. i know that area well. the 076 and 084 were often larger than needed and very heavy for all day year round work. the 096 was the rare big hoss race saw. my pops built 066 that beat them. full extractor pipe, custom reedbox inlet, mirror polish ports.... sure was cool. one time saw him cut a 22" log in under 2 seconds. each chain link was polished with jewelers rouge. took 60hours to build a chain link by link. for a shade tree poor guy he was never beat.

My apologies if this may have been covered before...

I'm doing some research into Zero Turn Mowers. We have a 9 acre piece of property, about 5 needs to be mowed, and so I am deciding which might be the best choice.
I have heard it is better to buy from a full dealer, rather than Lowe's/Home Depot/Tractor Supply, if possible?

I am looking at John Deere, Cub Cadet, Ariens, Husqvarna and Toro brand Zero Turns.
Budget I am hoping to stick to is $4 - $5K range.
    54" - 60" cutting deck.

Right now, of these 5 brands, the top two (due to their offering of a small trailer to tow behind, and a leaf bagger/vacuum type system) are the Cub Cadet and Husqvarna. John Deere is a very close 3rd, but I don't believe they offer a leaf bagger system for their Zero Turn mowers.

Just wondering if anyone has any strong suggestions or words of caution on any of these. Or maybe a brand I didn't list.

This is what I mean by leaf bagger attachment.

My opinion, if you have to mow 5 acres buy a used commercial mower in your price range. The others aren't made to cut that much that often.
