I’m going from a 2016 TRDOR to a 2023 TRDOR with all these new sensors and electronics I didn’t have on my 2016. Assuming I’m not going to modify the truck with a different grill and any lift modifications, do these systems work without causing normal driving problems? Seems reasonable with more sensors and solid state devices, reliability might suffer since there are more things that can fail. I do drive off road but not hard core stuff. Just hills, ruts and Rocky or wet conditions at a slow pace.

I've had my truck since May of 2021 and not a single issue. Unlike some folks here I appreciate the extra set of electronic eyes backing me up. I don't depend on them and I drive like I don't have them, but none of us are perfect. The cross path detection has saved me a couple of times when backing out of parking spots that when I turned and looked were clear (or so I thought), and beeped at me to let me know something was approaching. The emergency braking system has never had to apply the brakes for me but it's screamed at me a couple of times.

FYI, I replaced my OEM grille with a Pro Grille and had no issues with the TSS or adaptive cruise.

My opinion: adaptive cruise is a game changer, I love it. The lane crossing alert is useful but can get annoying, I turn it off (easy to do) when I’m in construction, as an example. The fact that all of this comes on an SR is amazing to me.

Good to know. Seems like I have seen some issues with people changing their grills and then having problems. The electronics sound like they can be beneficial as long as they don’t malfunction and then cause other driving issues. I have seen guys doing lift mods, straining their ABS brake lines, then losing all their 4WD Lo functions which would include MTS, Crawl and diff lock? What a nightmare that would be?

I went from a 2016 to a 2018. Even with the safety stuff it's still reliable.

It hasn't caused me problems yet, with one exception: it can on rare occasion flash an error message on your dash. The truck is still drivable when that happens.

Funny story, last November I did a week long trip in Big Bend. Lots of dust, a little bit of mud. After coming off of the River Road, I pulled over and lifted the hood. A park ranger immediately took notice and stopped to assist. I had to explain that the truck told me the PCS sensor was dirty and I was just washing it down. I didn't want to ride back to camp with the little yellow light staring me in the face. We had a good laugh about first world problems and that was it. That's the most eventful thing that's happened to me in 5 years of ownership.

I'm in the other camp when it comes to Adaptive Cruise, I hate it for anything other than really uncrowded roads.

Not dust, but ice or snow will cause the PCS system fail warning light to come on. First time it happened it took me a few minutes to figure out what was going on. Cleaned it off and the light went out.

The only problem I've had with the sensors so far is false failures if the sensors get dirty or frosty. You'll get a message that says basically "a sensor has failed take the truck to the dealer" but all you have to do is clean them off and they return to working.

@Horseshoez makes a good point for the new to adaptive cruise control crowd— if you want regular cruise control, hold the button down when you turn cruise on, and you get regular cruise control.

Exactly, 99 times out of 100 I'll hold for 1.5 seconds and get real cruise control.

    Adaptive cruise is excellent.
I would expect added complexity to bring added chance for failure at some point. Sort of comes with the territory.

I use that on a couple of local roads with a 30MPH speed limit. The police don't mean 35, they might give you to 33 or so. I don't blame them because there are no sidewalks and people fly down those streets as shortcuts.

One of those roads is hilly enough that the system alerts on nothing.

Dumped the Tacoma, that's all it needed.
Adaptive cruise gets turned off every time I drive (hold the cruise on button and it will turn off) the rest are turned off as much as the nanny software will allow.

when I am behind the wheel, I am driving. I’m not eating, texting, playing pocket pool, shaving, or applying makeup. I’m driving.

if I’m tired, I pull over and rest.

I don’t need or want my vehicle doing anything that I don’t tell it to.

adaptive cruise will KILL your mileage also.

But you still use the regular cruise control? Do you drive a manual transmission?

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Forward looking sensors can generate errors in snow/icy conditions. Clean off the sensors when this occurs and you should be fine.
My takeaway from the forum is do NOT attempt ANY form of electrical mod without first disconnecting the negative battery cable and waiting a bit. If not done it seems to result in bizarre electrical gremlins later.
I went from a '06 TRD OR AC to a '21 TRD OR AC so it was a bit of a "culture" shock. Adapting to the self-learning auto trans required some patience. I had to adjust to it, and it had to adjust to my driving. Doesn't quite have the same responsiveness as my previous 4.0V6 (MT) but the overall fuel economy is a point or 2 better. Learn how to interpret your fuel gauge and ignore the DTE (distance to empty) - I rely on a trip odometer.

Adaptive cruise control helps immensely! However, it has its flaws... Driving up to a vehicle that is turning off and has cleared your lane yet is still in the radar area, your vehicle will slam the brakes. Likewise, if you are following a vehicle and you are slowed down below your set speed by the adaptive cruise control, the car will accelerate when you switch lanes. This is nasty if you are just turning off the freeway onto the exit lane, where you should actually slow down. It may be just seconds, but seconds at a relatively high speed is lots of way! And that in crappy road conditions may be challenging. One needs to anticipate that.
Also, when the radar gets dirty in heavy snow, slush and ice, the system shuts off. You can activate the normal cruise control, but all systems tied to the radar will fail.
Last, if your adaptive cruise control detects slower traffic ahead and applies the brakes but you feel the need to brake harder, your brake pedal may feel a lot harder to press.

this has not been my experience. I still get 21. It does however make a weird dimming of my headlights at night…
