Watched Silence (Movie) on Kanopy. It's a good movie. Somewhat historically correct, good acting.

Started (ironically, randomly) Vatican Girl. Kind of fascinating so far. I remember SOME of this when it was happening.

Watched "Elvis" on HBOMax. The movie itself was unremarkable. Except for Hanks. And he is only remarkable insofar as his attempt at a Dutch accent is beyond awful.

Started it last night, has it's moments but overall the whole thing including a lot of the jokes felt way too forced to me.

He fled Holland when he was in his late teens/early twenties, IIRC. Came to the US, worked in the circus, joined the Army for a bit, got out and rejoined the circus/became a music promoter. In the movie, they show him managing Hank Snow, but I think he was managing Eddy Arnold or some other well-known singer before that (IRL). He later rejoined the Army, without telling them he'd already been in the Army, in order to take advantage of the "if you serve you get citizenship" drive that was going shortly before the US entered WWII. He never did get US citizenship, however, and claimed later, during the Presley Enterprises lawsuit (again, IIRC) that he was a man with no country so couldn't be sued in a US court. Oh, and during one of his Army stints he was medically discharged because he had psychological issues. On the one hand, he was a master promoter/merchandiser. On the other hand, he was a dirtbag of a human being. Allegedly.

Hanks portrayal, for me, took what would have been a mediocre movie and made it awful. I mean, not only is his accent not even close to Dutch, one couldn't even say, "Well, it's more Germanic." Because it isn't even a passable German accent. A friend of mine tried to argue, "Well, yeah, but he had lived in the south for a couple decades at that point, so his accent may not have been as 'pure'." Which I don't buy, as I have worked extensively with Dutch who have lived all their lives in the Netherlands, as well as Dutch ex-pats who have been in the US/abroad elsewhere for about the same length of time and, well, they still sound Dutch.

In short, I think the movie sucked. The soundtrack is about its only redeeming quality.

I didn't care for it either, it was kind of all over the place and the artsy fartsy cinematography didn't match the narrative.

Which is too bad, the Elvis story would have been a fascinating one, if one could only take the many unrelated facets of his life and whittle it down to a decent script. By most accounts the man would have been dead broke and in the gutter if he had lived just another one or two years. Those airplanes and jungle rooms put him in some serious debt.

    First episode was weak.
    Second episode was excellent.
Third episode was like a different show.
I don't usual watch men drop the towel from around their waist, while another man drools in bed before they jump in together and the festivities get started. I mean there was some sweaty man lip kissing before that, and after until they committed suicide together after a romantic meal. My wife was near barfing. But not only was it disgusting - of course they portray....screw it waste of time
Now I don't care what adults do in private, but I don't invite it into my living room.
