I dunno. Ford and Jeep decided to engineer a manual into their brand new offerings, and the Ford and Jeep MT crowd is not as dedicated as the Toyota MT crowd. It would seem strange to me that Toyota would axe it, when Ford and Jeep both just launched a new MT model. Time will tell. Let’s hope they keep the manual.

Get what makes sense financially and for your needs.

Both will be great vehicles. But 3rd gen is proven and trusted.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but at the same time there has been literally zero indication Toyota will continue offering a manual gearbox. This is a scenario where one must "Plan for the worst, hope for the best." I planned for the worst by buying a 2022 TRD Sport with the 6MT, and yeah, I'm still hoping the Gen 4 will have three pedals under the dash, but if it doesn't, I'm covered. :)

Your private party value may go up for a buyer looking for one, but your book value and dealer trade won't.

What really holds its value are the 2nd gen's

Yeah, not a problem; as a general rule I don't trade my cars in. Fortunately I live in New Hampshire where there is no sales tax, so there is no tax penalty for a private sale vs. trading a vehicle in.

In my experience toyota trucks from up north drop even further. No matter what the deal is, if the Carfax shows a registration anywhere in the northeast/midwest etc. I won't touch it.

If you were to look at the trucks available at a good deal on auto trader in my area, when you check the Carfax almost every single one of them have been registered up north, the ones that never went north, are priced higher same trim same miles.

LOL, apparently nobody told the folks selling used Tacomas up here in New Hampshire. That said, I have exactly zero plans to sell my Tacoma any time soon; given I refuse to drive vehicles with automatic transmissions, I have a short list of play-time third cars which ranges from either a Miata or S2000 on the low end up through a Cayman/Boxter on the upper end.

I've been monitoring the "KissMyGrits" spreadsheet since September, and on average, the three TRD models available with a manual transmission are running roughly 5% so equipped.

On one particular week, a whopping 59% of all TRD Pros had manual transmissions. :)

Keep in mind, the non-TRD trims are not available with a manual transmission and as such, when factored into the overall volume, Tacomas with three pedals under the dash have a fairly low percentage; I haven't run those numbers, but my gut tells me it is closer to 1%.

They're definitely hard to find. I tried to find one when I bought my 2017 new and there was nothing for weeks so I settled on the Automatic at the behest of my wife in the event she 'needed to drive it'. Well turns out she refuses to drive the truck in general because it's too big. So I in hindsight, I should have just waited. Such is life.

Oh yeah, I put a deposit down on my 6MT TRD Sport back in February 2022, my dealership got an allocation for my second choice color (requested Blue Crush Metallic, ended up with Barcelona Red Metallic) in August, the truck was produced during the first week of September, and I took delivery mid-October. Fortunately I was willing to wait, and fortunately my wife and I are of the same mindset, we don't like driving vehicles with automatic transmissions. :)

Side comment; since the whole COVID thing started, my annual mileage has dropped from 18,000-20,000 miles per year to about 3,000 miles per year. With this in mind I was shocked to see my 3 month old Tacoma rolled over 3,000 miles this last weekend. Here's the thing, some folks say they want a manual transmission so folks won't ask to borrow their truck, yeah, about that, my wife, son, and (future) son-in-law have all borrowed my truck on numerous occasions. o_O

    I believe it's around 5 or 6 percent.

Love some new info on a 24. I sure hope Toyota doesn’t carry over the worst part of a gen 3 … I.e the engines into the new gen. That would be pathetic.
