My 4.0 V6 on my Tacoma gave out recently and I figured if I’m gonna fork out the money might as well upgrade. Is it possible to fit a 4 runner or tundra V8 in it? Also would it require changing the transmission?

Anything is possible... it depends on your budget, timeline and patience. Any change of engine will likely require extensive reworking of ECM, TCM, and other modules.

If you have to ask, you should probably just put a 4.0 back in. Anything else will require hundreds of hours of time and likely a few years to acquire all the right parts.

You could probably put in the 4.7 V8. I imagine they’re inexpensive and plentiful to buy. Or, just put in another 4.0 because they’re easy to find and would plug right in with no modification

Still not quite sure, mechanic is tearing it apart tomorrow. Hoping its fixable, but always planning for the worst....

If you have to pay a mechanic to figure it out, you will not want to pay a mechanic to figure out how to put a motor other than a new/rebuilt 1gr in there.

The most logical thing to do would be to put another v6 in. Will other engines fit? Yes but nothing about a project like this is going to be a bolt in turn key. If you have the fab skills or money to pay someone to do it, and have the ability to be without a truck for a few months go for it!

There has been a few guys who have put a 4.7 v8 toyota engine in these trucks, and I think someone even put a 5.7 v8 tundra engine in one as well.

No need to talk down here man, if I wanted to figure it out myself I could. My 'mechanic' is my brother, I just don't have the time right now with work.

not to mention it matters where he lives, for example if he lives in conmiefornia it will be in the very least an absolute fucking nightmare dealing with bar/chp/dmv if he does a v8 swap if not impossible, not to mention the nightmare in costs if he can even find a mechanic who will touch the project, assuming he does the money he spent he could have bought a brand new Tacoma or 4Runner or even full sized v8 domestic guaranteed

So in short just find a 1gr (preferably from the same year as yours) and drop it in

He wasn’t talking down, he was being honest. Paying a mechanic to install any engine besides what was in it will easily cost you double or triple.

No one assumed your mechanic was a relative working for free.

Yeah I'm in Texas, but you're right I'll most likely just replace it.

I'm curious how a 1GR bit the dust at only 155K.

    I vote 1JZ swap.:D

1KD, 2TR, 2UZ, 1UR, and 3UR are all probably reasonable options that you could potentially get communicating with the other systems in the truck without THAT much trouble.

But really, popping a 1GR back in there is likely your best bet.

If you wanted a bit of a challenge, but not THAT much of a challenge… dual VVT-i 1GR.

Just talking from experience. Learn from my mistakes

It's always something with an engine swap with these newer vehicles. Electronics not communicating, dash not working, engine codes, custom headers, etc. etc....
