2012 Tacoma JBL Audio

Just bought my Tacoma (JBL Audio) a few months ago, and heard a bit of rattling in the driver's side door based on different bass levels. After removing the door panel and inspecting the speaker itself I realized that the speaker was blown and resulting in the rattling I was hearing, plus nearly zero audio out of the door. My question is, would it be better to replace the speaker with the OEM JBL speaker (P/N: 8616004130) or should I attempt to go aftermarket?

What are the aftermarket restrictions for the JBL system?

The OEM replacement speaker is around $140 whereas an aftermarket speaker set on Amazon would be somewhere around $100.

My understanding is that on the JBL system, the tweeters use all High levels and the 6x9 speaker is all lower levels.

Truck is equipped with entune system as well.

The factory JBL stuff is all 2ohm which creates some issues when replacing speakers but keeping the factory amp.

4ohm sets will work just fine but you’ll notice a drop in overall volume. There are a few 2ohm and 3ohm component sets out there but they’re few and far between. Most of the infinity 6x9 component sets are 3ohm so look into those.

no way on earth I’m paying more than $20 for a factory replacement lol. Look in the 2nd gen marketplace and I bet you can find someone who just upgraded their system and is selling stuff off cheap

 

I'm with you $140 for one factory speaker felt outrageous. Do you know if the rear speakers are 2ohm or not as well?

There’s multiple JBL Upgrade threads here in A/V. Maybe one of the fellas that ripped out their JBL speakers can throw him a bone and send OP their pull-out.

 

I would happily take one if someone has it!

 

I'll try to look around the shop for at least one..... Worst case you could throw in a non "JBL" speaker to get you by for now.

These are 2 ohm but I have no experience with these specifically. I do have DS18 tweeters which are a common upgrade for the non-JBL stereo and like them.

 

after finding some 2-ohm speakers on Amazon and reading those reviews, it's pretty clear that a few of those options will definitely work. Thank you all for your input, I am sure I will be ordering some soon to get rid of that annoying sound of the blown speaker!

 

If you happen to have any JBL tweeters laying around, please let me know. I'm looking for a set I can hack up and use the connectors and mounting ring for my aftermarket tweeters. Thanks!

 

Or, you could get adaptors.

 

To my knowledge, there isn't a wire adapter for the JBL tweeters. I've looked extensively. If you know the right part#, please let me know and I'll be buying it immediately. (I know there are adapters for the NON-JBL trucks but those tweeters have a different connector so are not compatible with the JBL tweeter wiring).

I also know that they sell aftermarket mounting rings (which I already ordered) but due to the specific tweeter I plan to run I'll end up with better fitment if I can hack up a stock set of tweeters to use those mounting rings.

Yeah, it's easy to do a 30sec google or ebay search and think there's an easy solution. It's another to dive in and actually do some digging. All that stuff you see popping up on ebay is made for 3rd gen dash tweeters or 2nd gen non-JBL. You can't trust their descriptions as they're often wrong. On 2nd gens the JBL and non-JBL tweeters have different connectors based on the info I've read here. I haven't been able to find an adapter for the JBL version. It may very well exist but in all of my searching I haven't found it. I would welcome a specific link to the correct product if anyone has it.

 

I looked at pictures of the JBL tweeters and the harness on eBay it looked like it would fit. It was not the same as the regular Toyota speaker connector.

 

As mentioned, finding an a adapter is probably your best bet.... I believe theres 2(maybe 3) different connectors for the tweeters. I'm sure AliExpress has them.

We generally always give back the JBL speakers(just incase the owner wants to put it back to stock).

 

I just need confirmation. I've read many, many times here on TW that the JBL and non-JBL are not the same and they are also different from the 3rd gen ones. Taco*Tunes website sells adapters and they specifically state they don't work on JBL trucks. So far all info I've seen says they aren't the same and no info is telling me otherwise. Otherwise I would have already ordered an adapter harness.

 

The pictures aren’t great because it doesn’t show the pins inside the connector, but it is different than the normal Toyota harness, and if I were looking for a JBL tweeter harness I’d be willing to try it out for $15.

Wish I could help more but I don’t have any JBL speakers to confirm. Another option is to get with your local stereo installer and see what they use.
