Seeing a rusty one here is about as rare as seeing a clean one in the NE

The inner wall of the boxed portion is a thinner metal anyway, you can just cut it open to vacuum and weld it back. But ideally whatever you're spraying is something that creeps and then you don't have to worry about the flakes anyway.

Luckily I don't have to worry about it on this truck. But maybe it'd be worth it as a preventative measure..

Not a bad idea to coat the inside with something. Either fluid film or the eastwood product, wait until the weather has gotten warm and there would be the least amount of moisture inside the rails though

They must've been a more popular truck out there in the first place, cause they're everywhere out there and the PNW

Yea I thought it might be good to protect it from mud and clay getting in on trails. But yea I was concerned about moisture getting trapped inside. Maybe I'll have to drive to the desert and do it there lol

Most of them in California were 5lugs or prerunners. I remember the day I bought my 97 there was about 100 5lugs on the lot and 1 4x4 in the showroom.

Maybe...I know they're more popular here than in the Midwest for sure, just due to all the 'domestic' brand loyalty, hardly see any Toyota trucks when I visit MO.

But out here not nearly as many have succumbed to the elements or been bought back and crushed so they're still kicking in some condition or another. Definitely not all are clean lol. Just not rusty

Finding a 5 lug here is a challenge, maybe see one once a month.

Ik mine wasn't a CA truck since it doesn't have EGR.

Until the 3rd gen. Nearly every 3G Tacoma out here is 4wd thanks to the overland trend. But yeah with 1st/2nd it's mostly Prerunners followed by 5 lugs then 4x4s. Until you get further north or toward the mountain towns

Same here in the mountains the only one I see is Tyler's old truck. But if you head towards socal or the bay they are everywhere.

Not all CA 5VZ trucks had EGR, it's pretty uncommon on the 5VZ in general. Check your hood sticker it'll say what emissions coverage it has.

I was wondering why the 5VZ didn’t need it but the 1FZ apparently did. Not sure if my 3RZ truck had it. I guess the V6 burns cleaner?

When I got the second gen we looked at 16 dealers to find it. The only dealer that had exactly what I wanted was Lancaster. The DCLB 4x4 was almost impossible to get in socal.

It's not about burning cleaner it is all about meeting CAFE standards. The type of vehicle, weight of vehicle, size of engine determines the amount of total emissions allowed and then they put whatever devices necessary to meet the requirement and the requirements for weight and year changed based on state and year often.

My 96 had an EGR system, but my 97 didnt. Both 5VZ's. I definitely prefer without. Super picky little vacuum modulator on it that was hard to diagnose when I had a leak.

Our whole area is shutting down from this freezing rain. People are already getting in wrecks and our school buses all run on bald tires so schools are being let out. TxDOT didn’t even brine the roads like they were doing post-2021 snowpocalypse.

Saw this cool SC300/400 this morning though. Always want a car but then I remember how impractical they are with our roads.

Yea those old EGR systems are really annoying on 90s Toyotas, I assume on other makes too. My 97 Land Cruiser had a P0401 the whole time I had it. The next owner ended up deleting it. I wonder if it was cutting power since I had to downshift to 2nd gear on most sustained grades.

Yea everything's closed here too, and they didn't salt the roads here either for some reason. I've heard in Texas people refuse to go slower than 80 mph, even in an ice storm. Be careful out there.
