If you want 10 years trouble free I’d choose the 2.7L, use the recommended oil and change it and the filter every 5k miles or twice a year and the PCV valve every 2 years.

As for towing, there’s complaints on both engines by the power hungry crowd wanting to do 75mph while towing. These clowns don’t take into consideration the speed limits of the towed vehicle or its tires, so they always complain instead of getting a Tundra.

Don’t be those clowns, obey speed limits and those of your vehicles, you don’t have to add anything to the transmission if your towing is at the rated capacity.

I have seen these trucks at the hands of contractors who abuse and overload the crap out of those 4 cylinders and they’ve lasted well over 10 yrs.

    Have no fear
    Cheers!

4cylinder has no business in a truck this size unless turbo diesel. Get the 4.0! Nissans are good trucks too

Initially I say go with the 2.7 because you know what to expect but for the task at hand the v6 Nissan might be better.

I have never driven the 4.0 Nissan, so I'm not sure how it is.

They are both reliable trucks. It'll be a crapshoot between them buying used. The 2019 Frontier is a well proven platform; that's the 15th year of that generation.

Both are exceedingly reliable. Frontier tows great with the 4.0L and it's a really nice engine in general. The turning radius can frustrating with a trailer hooked up.

Drive both, it's really personal preference.

170,000 miles on my 4.0 frontier now, not so much as a leak. You open the hood and it smells like road dust, nothing more. I would get that motor again in a heartbeat. The mpg isn’t bad either.

Tows great too. I’ve pulled fully loaded 6x12 uhauls comfortably, car trailers too.

I have heard that the Frontier turning radius is a little frustrating.

I like the fold and store OEM roof rack availability of the Tacoma. I frequently need space to put a canoe or long lumber.

Another full day of reflection on this and my towing parameters need to be adjusted. I probably tow 3-4,000lbs 4 times a year and regularly tow 1,100lbs every other week for 15 miles in city traffic.

I’m 60:40 Tacoma over Frontier, but I meet with the tax man next week and that will surely set the tone and speed of buying said truck.

What do you think it would cost to go through all the maintenance items required if I do it myself? For services that are required at 70-80,000 miles on a four-cylinder Tacoma?

The more people I talk to who have had the Frontier tell me to go for the Tacoma calming turning radius as the main complaint other than small bed size.

OEM roof rack weight capacity is tiny , just so you know. Like 150# or so. Will hold a canoe easy enough, but lumber might be a stretch.

The 4.0 frontiers are extremely reliable. I would put them ahead of the 3.5 Tacoma's allll day. The 4cyl is a bulletproof work horse but if you're towing it just won't cut it. esp 3k pounds.

My father has a 2010 pathfinder with the 4.0 and just hit 200k. It's been flawless.

If you'll actually tow 3k lbs often, stay away from the 2TR-FE Taco.

If you want decades of trouble free driving and very small cost of maintenance get the 2TR-FE Taco.

Nissan's corporate look on the '21 and older Frontiers is just horrible, too much chrome and just poor design.

If ur buying a utilitarian work vehicle based on looks, you're doing it wrong.

That may be but I'd like something that I like the looks of as well. Besides, I'd take a Toyo over a Nissan any day.

Can you elaborate on the poor design comment?

The grille "design" that all Nissans had, up until recently anyway.

\_/ This thick sideways "C" in chrome. Almost every make has a corporate look and Nissan's just looks bad IMO.
