Do I have have a "California" truck?

Hey friends. I've got a 2000 Tacoma, 5 lug. 2.4, auto, step-side bed. 274k

After 35k miles of just oil changes and air in the tires, Im replacing some consumables.

I found that the standard upstream O2 sensor does not fit my truck. However the "California" type plugs right in.

I'd like to replace my ignition coils and spark plugs. Do I need to buy California specific coils? I'd appreciate any clarification on California specific components. I'm in Georgia and do not know the history of the truck.

I've attached a photo of the engine bay if that is useful.

I usually buy parts from rock auto unless you guys have other recommendations. Truck is a daily driver.

 

I would say yes, based on the mirror style

 

Take a photo of the engine label under the hood. It should say California or Federal emissions. Also, verify if the hood is the original one for the truck. Usually they had vin stickers.

I don’t think there are a ton of differences. Usually rockauto is pretty good at pointing them out.

also I think cali trucks had 2 cats instead of one

 

If it has a surfboard in the back, it's from CA.


Might be an emissions sticker on the hood. Check VIN.

There is no sticker, so I'm going to assume this isn't the original hood.

The California vin site (thank you for the link) says no test history

The truck also only has one catalytic converter.

Anyone can speculate based on specific parts on the truck but to know for sure you need to run the Vin. Here’s a couple options:
Run the vin on the Toyota spec website, you’ll need to make an account.
Or go to a Toyota dealer and buy/order a replacement under hood emission label.
Eventually you’ll need the sticker to know what parts to get for your truck.

California emission Trucks were shipped all over the country .

So it would not have the California Emissions History

I have the California Emissions never far from the Atlantic Ocean.

My 2003 5 lug in bought in Hawaii is California spec, my 2004 that I sold that originally came from somewhere on the east coast was California spec, and the 1999 4wd I own is bought in Hawaii non California spec. Whoever said above that they shipped California spec emissions trucks all over the US is right( @Bivouac )

 

Other than the already confirmed O2 sensors, does anyone have a comprehensive list of differences between CA compliant trucks and non CA compliant?

Why in the world would CA trucks get a different mirror? For 2000 at least there is a different mirror with off road package, but that’s not state specific, according to local favorite Rockauto.

 

When I purchased mine from RA years ago, I grabbed the "CA-style" because they were smaller and stationary. I no longer see these advertised on there at all for my 99 but they're there under "base" for 01, so guess idk

 

Mine was originally sold in CA and is still there, and other than the cat I have never seen any other reference to a CA-specific part. Are you sure your concern isn't imaginary?

 

If your exhaust looks like this, then you have a California Spec vehicle. The front pipe has a cat and the center pipe has a cat.

 

The ECM was also different between the 2 emission versions!

After some closer inspection, I have determined I do infact have a California emissions truck.

The big give away was actually that the California coils use a plastic spark tube that, instead of the a traditional spark plugs wire.

California:


Federal:

 

It depends on the year of the truck as well.

1995-1999 all had spark plug wires
2000 Federal spec had spark plug wires
2000 California spec had coil-on-plug
2001-2004 all had coil-on-plug

Basically California just got the update one year earlier, for 2001-onward they were the same for both (O2 sensors, ECU, all of it).

As far as the mirrors go, that wasn't a California spec thing, there are just various mirrors depending on grade level and options.

2000 V6 Auto 4x4.
1. No label under the hood. I'll get one from my local dealer.
2. Toyota spec website says nothing about California.
3. I have two cats.
4. Denso O2 California sensors do not fit.
5. California state website shows nothing.

I believe it is time for new cats. I might just upgrade the entire exhaust system.
