Yeah, well there’s 2 parts to that response.

    The weight part.
And the “don’t take advice from me “ part.

    What the……???
That’s a contradiction if I ever seen one.

All in fun man. I don’t take none of it personal.

Its been a long weekend and I may have read that a little wrong, but my take is engineers are not experts and there are many examples of their screw-ups along with financial people making decisions based solely on the $$ and then the experts have to come in and fix things. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

    For the record,

I should have used “Profit margins” make the decisions.
I should not have placed the blame on the accountants.

See guys, I am not afraid to admit my mistakes.
And being corrected isn’t always a bad thing.

    Now, back on topic.

75w-110 is a great weight for the rear diff, especially if you tow. It’s not a good idea to put that weight in the t-case, just run 75w-90. I run the above mentioned now through hot desert climates or 5 degrees high in the mountains (like today). No problems ever.

I’ve heard so many documentaries say this exactly it’s funny. Probably 2/3 of them were on companies that failed due to expensive oversights that engineers had warned them over lol.

    I appreciate the input.

What is it about the t-case that won't comply with 110?

    What is the t-case model?

Is this model available on other Toyota vehicles?

I plan on keeping it for as long as possible and I feel maintenance is part of that.

Thicker oil equals less play, or perhaps rather a better absorption of pressures when changing directions?

Higher viscosities means everything has to work harder (everything) which adds more stress on components.
    Here is a comparison:
Wave your arms around in the air.
Now get in water and wave your arms.
Now get in a giant vat of pudding and wave your arms.

Gears have to do the same thing and there is an increased effort to do it, just like waving your arms.

    Thicker is not always better.

I totally get what you mean.
So this would be a negative MPG analysis?
But will running a thicker oil compromise the internal components?

I would say yes. Test have been done on components with what lubes flow best with tolerances. The reason they spec oil/lubes weights that are best for that specific part. They spec 75w is best, for that particular transfer case. Just like 0-20 for engine.

75-90 here. 70,000 w/no issues. coldest truck has operated in was in the high teens so cant speak on sub zero. full disclosure, i am not an accountant or engineer.

I switched to only ordering the specific transfer case oil from Toyota from now on. Supposed to have a formula others are close to but never exact.

Can you elaborate on the "shifter slop" that was removed?

It’s a transfer case. It has a small pump, a synchro, and generic moving parts with bearings. It really is not picky as to what is in it. The 75W stuff is fine, but it’s not special over anything else. Modern anything is seeking maximum efficiency. That’s why other than turbo engines, nearly everything today specs 0W-20 or 5W-20. And that’s fine, they’ve been engineered to be okay with it, but that doesn’t necessarily mean what they’re spec’d for is ‘best’ or what the component ‘was designed for’.

There are tons upon tons of 4WD owners who get their trucks serviced at the dealer. I have yet to see anyone say their dealer put in the specified 75W. Everything I’ve seen is 75W-90. Their t-cases haven’t blown up and likely won’t sooner or later than the 75W counterparts. both fluids are 75W when cold, just one is a bit thicker than the other when warm. Both fluids are significantly thinner when warm than cold, so it really doesn’t matter. If the tcase can handle cold 75W, then it can handle hot 90. Same for the 75W-110 in question.

For the record I run the 75W, but I know how fluid works and running 75W-90 isn’t going to hurt anything. Like I said, it’s a transfer case.

there was at one point a dude running 75W-140 in his t-case below freezing and it shifted perfectly fine.
