If you get a 3rd gen, I'd opt for a 2022 or 2023 model. You're comparing a last year 2nd gen vs a first year 3rd gen. Test drive both, see what you like more. Both will last with proper maintenance.

I think it's a terrific power plant when used within its parameters. It's not an off road race truck or mountain climber or dune runner.

Ummm, I've done 3 of them when I was a service manager. 1000% do not need to pull the motor.

Both good engines, as stated before the 1GR (4.0) has more low end torque and has always been a “truck” engine. The 2GR (3.5) has been around forever in different applications, from Camrys to my girlfriend’s ‘13 highlander to many members of the Lexus fleet. Using it in a truck rather than a FWD/AWD vehicle saved a lot of headache for the 3.5 as you can finally access all the spark plugs easily without fighting and cursing for hours. Test drive a 3rd gen, if you end up liking it more than your 2nd gen then go ahead and pick one up. I’m gonna drive my 2007 until it dies because it’s just a nice and simple truck, I can do all the modification I want without messing up any sensors or electronics.

No cheats. It's a basic timing chain motor. Everything came apart and went back together fine.

Minus the timing cover leaks that cost the same to repair and happen at much lower mileage. :anonymous:
