3.5 is more fuel efficient and more power. 4.0 is bulletproof. Neither will leave you stranded. If I had to choose, I’d say Yes

Couldn't resist adding some more wood to the fire here - Toyota still to this day uses the petrol powered 4.0L single VVT-i 1GR in Hiluxes, Prados & LC 70's around the world. They still haven't made the switch over to the 2GR even though both motors came out at the same time back in 2004-ish

In all reality, you'll see very little difference between the two, especially since there's so much overlap in their respective designs. I don't notice much of a difference between them after having owned a 3rd gen & now owning a 2nd gen

Better yet a tundra 4.7 v8. My old ex gen 1 is still running strong at over 300k miles. It was by far the best Toyota engine I owned. I just hope this 3.5 can live up to it.

Yes, the FSM does say to remove the engine. In reality, having done a few of them myself? The engine does not need to be removed. 100% of the timing chain and/or head gasket job can (and is) done with the engine still firmly bolted to its mounts, safely in the vehicle. The oil pan doesn't have to come off either (which is the only reason why the FSM says to remove the engine). There are two small (M6?) studs that screw into the block, through the bottom-face of the timing cover. If you simply unscrew those studs the timing cover comes off easily, no need to futz with the pan at all.

Wikipedia is fine. If you go to the article, you'll see Corolla is not listed. I typed in the wrong thing b/c my boss was yelling at me while I was posting.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Okay, thanks, so I'm not crazy. :)

Long story short, the cheapest quote he got to have the work done was over $2,000; it was cheaper to sell the truck "As Is" and upgrade to the GR86 he's now driving. For days when he needs a truck he also bought a 4.9 liter 5MT 1995 F-150 Single Cab 4x4 with the 8' bed.

I think both are around equal quality and reliability (I own 2018 but many family members have 2nd gens) The engines are very, very similar when you get down to the foundation so to speak.

The real question is how detrimental the absolutely atrocious transmission programming will be to the 3.5L engines longevity. I bet a lot of drivers operate these trucks and never get them above 3000rpm because the programming makes that difficult in “lazier” driving. The engine spends 75% of its runtime lugging in too high of a gear. Probably not ideal.

I had an ‘08 Tacoma 4.0 with 350+k on it when I totaled it. I’d still have it today but…
I never had issues with the engine. I changed the oil every 5k (conventional)
I bought a ‘21 Tacoma and having prior knowledge of the 3rd Gen gear hunting issues, I got it tuned. The truck runs fine now.
Being a Toyota I’m expecting to get 350k on this truck as well

All toyota engines are 100% reliable (this excludes cross brands). Any other comment is heresy and deserves a ban.

Some of you guys need to own a VW or 90's chevy lol.

I only have seen one fail due to tech error. (my boss blamed me for putting 5w30 in a 10w30 engine) He had put a cam from a different used engine in a different head and it seized lol.

I owned 2, they sucked, but they always started.
